A shame really, the end of an era, Teletext Holidays is going to continue, but I guess in the last few years they've just been beaten by the popularity of the Internet.

I never moved away from the analogue version of it.

Indeed, Digital Teletext is terrible. I always switch back to analogue for teletext.

Will really miss this.

What will happen to 4-Tel, currently produced by Teletext?

A real shame. And for those who realise the BBC don't do everything better, Teletext had a much easier to use digital service which more successfully adopted the page numbering etc. IMO and I've always found it far easier to navigate.

I hope something will replace it on ITV and C4 - but as C4 have axed all their own red button content, I doubt they'll bother.

I can't see Teletext Holidays lasting long - as usual companies fail to realise their profitable aspects are profitable because of their links to the core service, and with it being easier just to find those holidays directly online, I expect that is what most will do.

Are the Rabbit chat services going too?

That's not always true though, and in this case it's 'core' service which it is most famous for is disappearing anyway. It's digital service hasn't really taken off and it's analogue service is having it's audience gradually taken away. I can see why they're getting out now.

This means that they'll lose their allocated DTT space on the ITV/C4 MUX. According to the Guardian article it was probably going to 2014 anyway so I doubt it'll be re-advertised

Is was never as good as 'Oracle'. I loved to 'page the Oracle'. Wink

I used to love that, it was just right to play when you were waiting for something as a time filler.

Also remember the Teletext Guides that used to come free with the Sunday newspaper back in the mid-90s when analogue Teletext was at it's peak.

I guess the whole brand of 'Teletext' is now dated exercise - analogue or digital.

Don't think it's been mentioned here yet, but the S4C Sbectel service will close on analogue at the end of the year.

The (rather good) digital version of Sbectel will also close on 9th September (the day the first Welsh transmitter completes its switchover and everyone watching Freeview in Wales has to retune to keep watching S4C - hopefully they'll be a few adverts nearer the time to point this out).

I think I was about 12 before I clicked that it wasn't called "Digester".

Wrong company, but this seems appropriate enough here:

Shame Oracle can't come back. I wonder if Teletext's closure will be anything like Oracle's, or will it just go out with a wimper?

Since when? It's never worked for me on Freeview. Digital Teletext either freezes the entire box, takes all day to do anything and is so much of a pain in the behind it's unusable. Four Freeview boxes, same issues on all of them even brand new out of the box. I haven't used it on Sky so to me it'll be no great loss but I don't know if it works better on Sky than it does on Freeview, though I fail to see how it can be any worse.
