Just in case anyone's interested Smile...

Technicians at CBC (Canada's public broadcaster) have been locked out apparently, and CBC Newsworld is (or was) taking programming from BBC World from the looks of its schedule for today.

*cross fingers* I hope if this turns into a full blown strike and regular programming is suspended, that they will just completely simulcast BBC World. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif Then again, that's just a dream.

Yes, we are. What is the dispute about?

Sounds like the good old days of the 1970s! What we need is another strike on ITV - maybe they'd get more viewers trying to run a makeshift service (as TV-am did in 1987) than they do now - let's face it they can't do much worse!

Here's the story about it so far on the CBC News website:

CBC technicians off the job
Last Updated: Fri Dec 7 12:26:50 2001
TORONTO - Picket lines went up around many CBC locations Friday morning because of a contract dispute involving technicians.

The union for 1,600 technicians, the Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers, says its members were locked out. The CBC says it had no choice after a series of union study sessions were held at some CBC locations Thursday.
Early Friday morning, the CBC issued a release informing the union that their actions constituted strike actions.

'The CEP's strike activities have prevented CBC from fulfilling its news programming mandate,' said Fred Mattocks, executive director of production and resources for CBC Television. 'The CBC, therefore, is ensuring that programming can continue without CEP staff.'

A union spokesperson called it a 'sad day.'

'We are disgusted by CBC's aggression and intimidation,' said Peter Murdoch, vice-president of CEP.

Members of CEP were in a legal strike position Thursday, but most elected to stay on the job, or attend study sessions.

The key issues include wages, overtime, shift turnaround and meal compensation.

Already some local programs have been cancelled on CBC Radio, and it looks like regional TV news is cancelled on CBC Television at this time.

I remember reading somewheres that the BBC was on strike once. Did they actually stop all their programming?

I remember that some individual ITV1 regions went on stike in the 1980's (UTV went off for 2 weeks in 1987 for example.) What happened? Did these regions lose out on their ITV1 totally or was another regionn shown?

BBC Techinicians did go on strike last years back on a Saturday morning. Live and Kicking had to be pre-recorded in the week (Katy Hill even said it was recorded)!

Just to update, it is now a full fledged strike at the CBC. The national newscasts are just awful - bare bones bulletins, and all the regional news have been replaced by... BBC World. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My wish has come true, too bad at the expense of the CBC News operation.

The only thing I remember is tuning in to watch Newsround and finding it had been replaced by a Bugs Bunny cartoon....

There was a strike by the BECTU union in June 1998 (I think).

The National News on BBC One and Two (Breakfast, One etc) was replaced with News 24/World joint service simulcasts. I think Breakfast was 25 minute bulletins and recorded programmes in the back half hour.

There were just enough managers and staff who were prepared to cross picket-lines to mount the skeleton news service from the News 24 studio.

Ah Yes, I remember that. You are right noggin, the bulletins were about 25-30 minutes on the hour on BBC ONE, and then another type of programme would be on at the half hour.

As I remember some of the technicians were EXTEREMLY **** ed off, because as far as they knew, there would be no news, and they tuned in to find a joint News 24 / World service !
