After 4 series and 40 episodes C4's comedy drama Teachers has been axed - according to JCB via the Sun.

Following numerous cast changes, the final episode of series 4 - a Christmas special - attracted just 1.7m viewers.

Teachers was the first C4 drama to be recommissioned for a third series!

A shame IMO - the fourth series wasn't as good but still better than the majority of drama series on TV - and the new characters introduced were really good.

Change was needed however - but unfortunately they've gone for the easy option!

I'm sad to hear that. It was IMO one of the best programmes of the last five years.

In some ways though, maybe it's better to axe it now rather than totally flog it to death. This way we'll look back on it in a more positive light than if it had been run into the ground after countless series.

I'm sad but i'm not suprised. Since my favourite characters left the last series, it's just not been the same.

I loved it, but Series 4 was my least favourite of the lot. But hopefully Channel4 can now look forward to some brilliant new programmes, I can't wait until Green Wing returns which was brilliant, and Shameless as well is a great drama.

Technically if Teachers regualarily pulled in 2m, and the last episode got 1.7m was it actually doing that badly?
Perhaps the ratings are getting to channel 4 with Desperate Housewives getting over 4 million, perhaps they expect the same from everything.

It is good that they are working with the creators on new projects though.

I think the general concensus is it's a shame, but no great surprise.

And at 40 episodes, Teachers is one of the longest running drama series on all channels over recent years. Few series get recommissioned for a third or fourth series - and British drama series tend to be very short at only 6-8 episodes a series.

Shame it has gone but have to say it may be for the best. Although not as good as previous series, series 4 was still good.

I had a feeling this would have been the last though however & it is probably best it has finished. It's best to go out on top than everybody saying "why didn't they finish that years ago"

I couldn't honestly have seen where they could have gone with it in series 5

Thanks Tiger Aspect & Channel 4 for four series of this excellent comedy drama.

May more come out of channel 4 like Teachers & Shameless for years to come.
