There's two different One O'Clock News ones floating around, there's one from a Michael Buerk fronted edition that's a total shambles, as none of the reports are ready when they went on air.

It was also the day that Nigel Lawson resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer:

That video doesn't include the expletive filled parts of the talkback!
At least it explains why the talkback was recorded for that particular edition, because that day was being filmed as part of that behind the scenes feature.

There's another bit of talkback I saw once (I think on the Meldrum Private Parts), from an edition of Midlands Today, where they somehow managed to end the show early, then hung on the end caption of the news for ages, then running a trailer to fill the gap which led to them cutting back to network late. Again, chaos in the gallery.

What exactly is “TX” that the director refers to here, such as “run TX”? Something different to “run VT”?

In this now famous BBC News studio invasion you can here the gallery talkback, but amongst the chaos and the gallery countdown, what does the director mean by "animate charisma"?

It does sound like it, you can also hear them buzzing answers back to him in the way VT often would. Not sure why "TX", though.
It wouldn't be as confusing as it would elsewhere because what is often called TX in other places would've always been called Pres at the BBC.
Graphics kit that they're using to squash the picture to the side when wiping to the next headline, it could shrink and move the picture around the screen and so on. Bit like Quantel.

Somebody who worked on Pebble Mill took a seminar once when I was in uni, and I asked him why videos exist with gallery talkback and what their purpose was. He said it's done mainly for training purposes as an example of how things are usually done.
That's the official answer though, those working on the programmes probably thought differently
I know someone who worked on the early days of Newsroom Southeast and asked him about this in relation to the famous Guy Mitchelmore coffee cup outtake, which had gallery talkback. His answer was that they started recording theirs because there'd been lots of cock ups and they could apportion blame
Not a good idea anyway, wasn't it Look East that accidently put their (unfortunately quite sweary) talkback onto a bulletin many years ago?

For aThese days presentation don’t like anything non-broadcast on their lines so it doesn’t tend to happen any more.

'News TX', which was the VT area that played the reports into the news programmes

Charisma was a DVE - Digital Video Effects - device. It provided the fly-in fly-out and picture twists during the headlines. In those days vision mixers didn’t have that capability built in so you had to route sources out of the desk and via a DVE to get that kind of effect.
