Schofe: Nobody knows what's inside each card.
Director: It's lower.

The stuff they could get away with those days. I bet nowadays they wouldn't even be allowed to pass off recorded segments as live.

Is that really a strop? Taking a step back to calm down and reflect rather than going off on one is surely a professional way of dealing with the situation.

A strop is a strop, even if it's justified.

One thing I'd not noticed before is that on both occasions the tape fast forwards. I thought the second was it spooling back.
The second time it seems to cue up for the end credits as Vt thought they were 'off it'

I’m not sure why they couldn’t spool back to the start of Richard Digence’s act the first time VT cocked up - unless that would have meant coming off air for a longer period of time and risk over-running.

The director was wanting to by the sound of it, he was giving VT directions to go back but by that point Pres had already taken it back to air - looks like they did that as soon as it stated playing. Either that was a backing copy (although why [wouldn't they have used that?) or VT didn't follow his instructions (presumably weary of doing anything else) which is a good thing as it was back on air, something that the director soon realises.

It is a spectacular bit of footage, so much in it. Am really tempted to transcribe and annotate it.

So how much of this was live? Was it just the end game?

Hearing "Tell Me When" always reminds me of this video, as it did again as it's just played on Radio 2. I like to think that Ken Bruce is a secret TV Forumer.

I wish the clip went on just a little bit longer. It cuts off just as they're getting into the post-match analysis.

I think this is at least the third time this video spawned a thread, but I can't complain. It's full of so much fascinating insight.

We get a fine example of gallery talkback, two technical faults, communication between the studio and the floor as well as "pres", the vision mixer working with the musical guests (I'm led to believe that closeups etc are pre-recorded and interspersed with live wide shots) and how info from the gallery influences the continuity announcer. And I'm sure I'm overlooking a couple more too.

If anyone can find a more richly insightful piece of broadcasting, I'd like to see it.

At what point in the video does Philip swear? I listened last night but i don't have the facility on my headphones to switch speakers to hear the different output.

I don't think it happens in the clip we have here, but on a different recording that goes on after this one has finished. The only swearing we hear in this clip is from people in the gallery when the tape starts fast forwarding.

14:10. If you are having problems with hearing the Gallery, try these steps:

If you're using personal headphones or earphones, take the left earphone out, leaving just the audio from the gallery from the right earphone.

If you're using built-in or plug-in speaker on a PC, I'd recommend downloading the video, opening the video in VLC Media Player, selecting the 'Audio' menu at the top of the window, select 'Stereo Mode', followed by 'Right'. This will switch it so that both speakers will only play the sound on the right. Just remember that this will be reset after you close the window, so you will need to repeat the process every time you access the file.

It also shows how after the event it's easy to post on somewhere like this and say "oh why didn't they do this", when you can the sheer confusion and panic when it goes wrong. The director/PA are essentially trying to do three things at once at one point - find out what's gone wrong, get the show back on air and tell LNN what has happened and how to deal with it. Also worth noting LNN/Carlton were extremely quick with getting the programme slide up the first time, almost too quick in fact as they come back to it almost immediately which seems to indirectly cause the later issue as VT think they are still off air.

I did see the UTV version of this in the dim and distant past - from what I recall they go to the UTV clock rather than a breakdown caption, and stay on it for much longer, presumably as they weren't aware of what was going on and it all happened so quickly that LNN wouldn't have had chance to tell the network any timings. Even the second return is very much no-notice "pres go now" from Fountain. But to answer an earlier query, there was no Carlton branding at all as this was still in the period where the regions were provided a clean feed to work from.

My favourite thing about the clip is how much of an absolute pro Philip Schofield is - it's situations like this when he's worth every penny. Watch at the end when they have no idea how much time they're going to have and he effortlessly spins out the calls with the contestants as required. You used to see a similar thing at the end of House Party when Noel would have any amount of time depending on how long the Grab a Grand caller had won, it was a masterclass in live presenting.

No, it is in the video I posted… the director asks Phillip and Emma to come back into the studio to record trails and Phillip responds that he can wait ‘at least five **** minutes’.

You can see where the pre-recorded insert ends during the second fast-forward. I believe everything from Emma reading the questions (at 02:52) is live. The closing credits (presumably just the words on a black background and theme music) are pre-recorded but seem to be mixed/superimposed live over the closing shots of the studio.
