Such a strange decision, in an era where it seems to be 'who can be the biggest indie', seems odd to break it down into four... unless the FremantleMediaUK brand is going to feature quite highly throughout all of this, just as Endemol does with Initial, Brighter Pictures etc.

As far as how they've broken it up is concerned, I think they've got it right, especially with regards to Talkback. A Talkback production credit would look very at home on QI for instance. However the TV geek inside me can't help but want it all to be Thames Television. It would work, even if you had Thames Factual, Thames Drama etc.

Thames is obviously the most iconic brand, and in fact I remember being told that when Pearson TV became FremantleMedia, a close 2nd choice was Thames, for the entire global operation.

It's important to note that FremantleMedia have banished Grundy and several other international production brands to TV history... and it may be that the same is the long term strategy here. But surely they wouldve done it already?

On a similar note, does anyone think that the public look at a TalkbackTHAMES production slide, and think "Oh, it's Thames! Didnt know they were still going"... or if not, will they think that when THAMES comes up at the end of Britain's Got Talent in 2012?

I doubt many pay too much attention though they might give it the briefest thought. Gotta remember that for a lot of people (18 or younger) watching BGT Thames never existed in the same capacity as it did for you if at all.

I know that, but also remember that a large part of ITV1's audience are aged 30 and over.

Knew that myself too! Very Happy I still reckon the audience for BGT skews younger but a lot won't notice or care even if they were born during the time period Thames was an entertainment juggernaut.

Why do I get the feeling "Tax breaks" " cut in regulations" and other loopholes are coming to mind as one of the main reasons behide all these changes....

And it is just the entertainment department's programmes that will carry the Thames brand. X Factor, BGT etc.

Surely they'd have been LWT territory in the days of yore Smile

I seem to remember Thames having their fair share of light entertainment as well? You are correct generally, of course. I think Thames as an entertainment indie struck gold in 2001 when Simons Cowell and Fuller came to them with the idea for 'Pop Idol'. That obviously rollercoastered into X Factor, BGT and the like and the relationships formed then largely remain today. The person that pitched to at Thames, Alan Boyd, was of course previously head of entertainment at LWT!

I wonder if Simon Cowell might fancy "Thames" for himself.

That could get complicated. Thames, Talkback Thames or whatever you want to call them co produce his shows with Syco but the rights from that side rest with Fremantle internationally. So if he did buy Thames he wouldn't be getting much from that side of things. And this whole rearrangement has come about because Talkback Thames are basically Fremantle UK, only now officially so. If anyone wants Talkback Thames, in most instances they'd be better off buying the whole of FremantleMedia because it's such a worldwide company. Rights for X Factor, BGT, Take me Out, etc etc etc.

I have wondered about the deal they have with Syco. Could Syco if they wish not sign up for another sharing of the rights and production to XF / BGT and go it alone? Or do Fremantle actually own those brands just as much as Syco?

Nice to see both Talkback & Thames back as separate production arms, funny isn't it I bet no one would ever think the Thames name would outlast Granada, LWT, Yorkshire, Carlton, etc. names back in 1993, nice to see the name still carry on nearly 19 years after their demise, even if it is in a highly neutered form.

EDIT: Just found this on Flickr, a kind of "What if" had Thames had kept their franchise and their famous ident to this day:

I think that was the plan, but they went bust about 6-12 months after they lost their franchise, all to do with their MTM acquisition
