Broadcast is reporting that talkbackTHAMES is to be split into four separate production brands. Thames for entertainment, Talkback for comedy, Boundless for factual, and Retort for indie scripted comedy. I don't have the link because the OP at Digital Spy forgot to post it.

Although it's not the same, but it's nice to see Thames back as a single entity, and probably one of the best independent producers in the UK.

The Talkback Thames brand will cease to exist from 1 January as chief executive Sara Geater restructures the company to create four label brands under the new umbrella of FremantleMedia UK.

The shake up, communicated to staff this afternoon, will see each label run by existing staff, comprising a managing director, head of production and head of development.

The aim is to give talent greater creative freedom and autonomy in a bid to win more new business and engage more directly with customers. A plan for the company operations is also being finalised.

Geater said that the senior management would be incentivised, based on their individual profits, and stressed that she had created labels as opposed to separate companies.
What’s in a name?

The four new labels of FremantleMedia UK

Thames will build on the indie’s entertainment heritage and be led by the current head of entertainment Richard Holloway, with two divisions headed up by executive producers Suzy Lamb and Andrew Llinares. Lamb becomes head of Thames Productions with Llinares taking charge of Thames/Syco Co-Productions. Gail Harman is head of development and Dean Jones is head of production.

Talkback will focus on comedy entertainment and will be managed by producer Dan Baldwin, with Juliet Denison and Beatrice Gay taking charge of development and production respectively.

Retort is the indie’s scripted comedy division and will be managed by comedy producer and executive Jon Rolph, who joined from the BBC in July. Gay will also act as head of production for this label. The head of development is yet to be confirmed.

Boundless will combine factual entertainment, factual features and specialist factual to create a ‘super factual’ label. The indie is conducting final interviews with shortlisted candidates to find an managing director, following the departure of Camilla Lewis to Cineflix in June. Fact ent boss Michele Kurland is also to play a key role.

Partnerships with drama specialist Projector Productions and Hillbilly TV remain in place and sit alongside the labels.

Geater said: “This new label structure allows us to showcase the amazing talent within our business by enabling us to be even more creative and innovative, to better respond to our customers’ needs.

“We’re committed to developing inspiring entertainment for broadcasters and audiences and I believe that this structure of labels with big ambitions will ensure we better serve our customers with bespoke propositions that will deliver them the hits of the future.”

She added that FremantleMedia UK, which she will lead, will continue to invest heavily in the labels and will provide key support functions such as legal, finance and HR. Programmes will be exploited commercially by FremantleMedia Enterprises.

I think it's very interesting that Talkback and Thames will become two different names now. I'd always thought that eventually they'd drop the Talkback or Thames or get a completely different name.

Not sure about the others though. 'Boundless' and 'Retort'?

It is a strange one, for years it has felt like a strange newly merged company what with it's seemingly interim name and slapdash logo that'd put C3NE to shame.

Still, as said before, it's nice to see two respected names standing alone once more though in actuality it's a fairly nothing change to us on the outside beyond that.

Not sure about the others though. 'Boundless' and 'Retort'?

Neither seem too out of place, Retort does at least link to Talkback given they're both comedy production companies and have that verbal terminology link. I think Boundless is quite the ambitious name for a factual producer.

It's been done many times before. Just copy the URL into Google, click it and you can see it. I don't have a subscription to it.

Exactly, it's the same as the FT, if you just search for the headline on google and go back to the page it'll appear in full.

I wonder if they'll bring back the old Thames logo then, or at least a modernised version of the skyline.

Lets hope we get the iconic Thames opening to the start or end of each programme, remodeled of course! Sounds like Sara hasn't planned for any new dramas then, such a shame!
