After the atrocious trophies for Strictly Come Dancing last year it's good to see that standards haven't improved for 2005.

The Star Spell trophy won by Richard Whiteley this evening looked straight out of Blue Peter c1980.

Sticky backed plastic anyone?

for celebrity programes like Star Spell and SCD, they usully dont make great trophies, becouse the fact they probobley ahve so many. WHile with public shows, they want the person to feel really special, and have something extreamly signifigant!

I'm sure that if the BBC spent a fortune on decent trophies for Celebrity Contests there would be a huge amount of criticism about money wasting. These programmes are all about entertainment and I'm sure that even the winning celebrity themselves would agree that the trophy (and probably even winning) isn't the attraction.

Yes, the BBC does have a particular track record in tacky celebrity trophies - and many real trophies aren't spectacular (the Blankety Blank Cheque Book and Pen springs to mind - though these do have a certain cult status!). But the Mastermind cut glass bowl looks decent enough and Channel 4's 15 to 1 used to give away some pretty interesting antique items as the prize.
