Well
Family Fortunes
is returning with Vernon Kay, I wonder if that will be given the 'drama/suspense' treatment as well-- let's hope not.
It is me, or does anyone else find the 'cat walking across a piano' soundtrack to shows like WWTBAM , Weakest Link and DOND highly irritating?

I'm not sure why you think the camaraderie is false. The friendship between the contestants is genuine. They stay in a hotel together for weeks while the show is being filmed, and obviously socialise with each other. They also have frequent reunions.

I simply cannot watch Deal Or No Deal, chiefly because the contestants appear so false. All this mock-camaraderie, coupled with the immense greed of so many that appear, puts me right off from the outset.

I sometimes find the selection part at the beggining of the show quite false because of some of the contestants' reactions. It comes accross as quite false in parts.

But the contestants don't actually know beforehand who is going to be selected. Obviously, if they've done about 15 games then they know they are in with a chance of being picked.
The only contestant to ever know beforehand was Pete Williams, he was the last of the male half of the "battle of the sexes" and the only guy left. He told me that it wasn't very comforting having an hours notice as it made him more nervous. They didn't bother with the "selection process" at the start of that game as it was obvious who it was.

Just out of curiosity, how do the contestants have their materials prepared such as photos and how is it that friends and family are always sat in the same seat. I always presumed that the selection was made before hand with a staged selection being recorded thus the materials being prepared and friends and family sat in the same seat with sometimes the banker leaving specific gifts to the player.
(P.S sorry if this comes across in a harsh tone)

Well, genuine it may be, but to me it certainly comes across with far too much luvviness. Most of the contestants annoy the living daylights out of me, chiefly because they are far too OTT - something that seems to have increased as the show has increased with age.
No longer can you just turn up, sit in your seat, and call out box numbers - you now have to put a huge act on, pace around, perform rituals... etc etc...

In answer to the question posed by the OP... Because it's not "cool".
It has to be "cool". Doesn't matter if it's not entertaining, or if the format's weak... If it's cool, it makes it.
It's not "cool" to bring back Blockbusters, even though (secretly), many people would love to see it return. Instead it has to be tension-filled twaddle.
It's the same with music. If it's a good, happy tune, it's not "cool". You have to have lyrics about ripping your labrador's leg off, and a "dark" melody, written in minor.
Same with comedians. Doesn't matter if they're not funny - as long as they are "cool".
"Cool" sucks. I hate "cool". And if people want to call me "cheesy" and "square" as a result, that's fine by me.
Form a queue.

AFAIK the selection is carried out by the producers, and no-one else knows who's doing it. Everyone has a collection of photos etc below the desk, which they carry to the table if they're selected.
Interesting point made, Mr Scott. Does this mean it's some kind of fad, started by Millionaire , which should eventually go away?

What's wrong with Golden Balls? Its a game of bluff and alliance forming.
Its frankly nonsense to suggest (as Simon did) that these shows "encourage dishonesty". They no more do that than EastEnders encourages people to use laundrettes.
Its a game. Get over it.
