Moving away from the political and onto the pres front, what did everyone think of the Swedish set used by Sopel?
Personally, I thought it was an enormous improvement over the usual World and 24 sets. The background and small spotlights seemed such a good combination of the modern and avant garde. Also, being able to see the Swedish crew in the background really added a sense of immediacy to the event.

Hopefully the relaunch will reach these standards, rather than the dull beige backgrounds, garish red astons and mundane direction currently present.

Yes, Swedish Television allowed the BBC to use some of their studio space, and it worked very well, as you said. It was a big improvement on the French and German election sets, which were, in fact, rooftops! I couldn't quite make out where exactly the Israeli set was - it seemed to be outside as traffic noise could quite easily be heard, and the background was wobbling (looked like paper!). An improvement on the Swedish special would have been to actually make it look like a BBC News Special - i.e. special titles, graphics and astons. I'm not sure why they didn't do it like this, as World usually do. Last night just looked like a normal bulletin with bits of it coming from Stockholm.

SVT is a member of the EBU and has very close links with the BBC. Quite a few BBC World Speicals have been co-produced with SVT and during the Gulf War, they arranged for BBC World to provide a Breaking News service. Not sure if they did ver opt in to World though in the end.

SVT also provided the crew and facilities for the last two Eurovision Song Contests I believe ...

While I agree it is best not to go into politics on here, I think I should clear something up.

The people who are saying 'yipee- they voted no' should realise that the Swedes, being a level headed kind of people, are not just voting No being they are obseesed with their currency. Unlike many in the UK, they have a good reason.

Sweden has VERY high tax- 56% for top earners and 25% VAT. This means that the poor, who in the UK get reasonably little, get a very good welfare payout. The poorer Swedes voted NO.

This in effect means that everyone is very equal in Sweden- the rich pay alot of tax and the poor get high welfare.

People felt that if they joined the Euro they woule lose this- and it would be bad for Sweden and it's society.

Of couse, some would have said 'NO' because they are worried about a new currency, but if you look at the figures the poor said 'NO' and the rich said 'YES'.

Well for whatever reason - lets hope people vote, correctly, for NO here too!

So did BBC News not provide any live coverage of the referendum in Estonia on the decision of Estonians to join the European family of which the UK is such a proud member?

So you've completely ignored everything he said about the Swedes actually having a good reason to vote no, and jumped back on the bandwagon? Rolling Eyes

Funny how to all the no-ers all the Swedes were held in a kind of contempt until yesterday, and now they're a shining example of level-headedness. Don'tcha just love consitency.

Swedish police say they have detained a man wanted in connection with the killing of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. The announcement comes only hours after police issued an arrest warrant for a suspect. A man was arrested near Stockholm and is being taken in for questioning, reports said. (BBC)
