I suspect beepy is implying that the studio was built to be a studio due to the fact it was built as part of the conversion of the mailbox into its current form rather than just an office with a small lighting rig hanging from the celing.

Sadly though - if you've seen the Midlands Today studio - you'll know that isn't the case... Very limited space and a far from great lighting grid. It may have been built to be used as a studio - but it was built to a pretty low budget by the look of it.

You only have to compare the Midlands Today studio at the Mailbox to the studios in Southampton, Plymouth, Newcastle etc. to see the difference. (And I mean compare the studios - NOT the sets in them)

What's the installation spec like at Leeds and Hull? Decent height? Reasonable sound soak?

You might be forgiven for thinking that all studios built for the BBC recently are well below par. Southampton, Newcastle and Plymouth were all built when the BBC had very high standards for studios, even regional ones. Clearly the Mailbox studio isn't as good as it should be. The studio at The Forum looks ok on screen, but AIUI is lit so that the cameras are pretty wide open...

The space was formerly an office for Central Networks until 2003. then they installed a studio, Which was low budget. I believe

The BBC are the only organisations to have occupied that space in the Mailbox development. It was designed and fitted out according to how they wanted it to be
