Subtitling English

Something I've noticed tonight and last week on Jamie's Chef - and increasingly on other programme too - using on-screen subtitles even though English is being spoken.


Tonight it was for one of the contestants dad - but he was perfectly understandable. Last week they did it for another contestant Thai mother - but again she was understandable despite a thick Thai accent and not the best English in the world.


I've noticed it happening increasingly elsewhere too, notably for Scottish and Irish accents. Yes, sometimes thick accents may be difficult to understand, but a bit of effort from the viewer is all that's needed - not on screen subtitling!

I would imagine the programme would be sold to america, and so it may be useful for that. Also it can be used for people mumbling, or just generally not being clear in what they say.

Now if there was ever a programme that needed subtitles, is Rab C Nesbit (spl)

I think even people from Sctoland would have trouble subtitling that programme

As a matter of fact Rab was back on TV tonight for the first time in years, it was on Paramount Comedy 2 but without (Teletext Pg888) Subtitles, I can make it out what they are saying, but I know people who have difficulty in doing so, in what is otherwise a very funny programme.

if they are so thick they can't understand a strong accent then they have 888 available for them. Subtitling UK accents in particular I find rather offensive

What's Rab C Nesbitt?

A comedy about a slobbish bloke, who spoke with a really thick Glaswegian accent.

I always seem to dig this out whenever subtitles on Rab C Nesbitt crops up, but from Points of View in 1990, complete with mis-spelling in the subtitling...
