As I said the old STV Edinburgh / Glasgow had spilt news, different High road eps, It also had a late show at 11pm but thats well swept under the carpet. It seems all the money has been spent on the new STV news tonight which is a shame.

Comments on Digital Spy seemingly confirming it is just one stream - Dundee is getting Edinburgh's news at 6pm, whilst the "local news" is a couple of 5 minute bulletins on the hour at points during the day, with other areas getting their local news at different hours, but shown across the network.
I thought they were pushing their luck as it was by having a national schedule with just what we assumed to be local news opt outs, but it's basically one channel with "local news" simulcast across the network and viewers expected to tune in at the correct hour to view their local news.
It seems for the three new licences the genuine local news commitment is just 2-3 5-minute summaries across the day compared to a supposed commitment of at least half an hour in peak time for other local TV stations.

I think that's what I was trying to say. It defeats the object of the 'ultra local TV' initiative anyway, but I always thought that would fail.
Furthermore, nobody bothered to even bid for a local franchise in Plymouth.
Perhaps they would, if they knew they could get away with only a couple of minutes of truly 'local' content each day.
So the local TV network seems to be evolving into a duopoly of That's TV and Made In TV, and STV taking over Scotland.
Sounds familiar…

It's the logical conclusion of how the local licences have been evolving. If you can have five local channels that produce their own content, but also share/show content with four different regions, there's not much of a jump to just having one channel that shows programming (nominally) produced in five different locations. Like S2. Or some future "Made In..." / "That's..." superchannel.
Or BBC One.
Or BBC One.

Whilst disappointing that the local content has been all but ditched (at the very least I would have thought separate news bulletins would have been kept), STV News Tonight was an impressive product. A very good presenter and a strong look. Quite strange to see STV correspondents out and about in France covering the election there though! A little light on stories IMO, whilst between 7:10 and 7:20 quite heavy in coming up/news in brief sequences. They did an international news summary with bed at 7:10, a still to come sequence with bed at 7:15, and then a UK news summary at 7:20, again with bed, which seemed like overkill. The UK summary could certainly ditch the bed, and just be read as a couple of stories before the next report.
Despite personally viewing it to a be a bit light on stories, I do think this deserves an hour long slot. This would allow for more reports from STV News at 6 that are relevant nationally, and more national news reports from ITV - from what I saw no mention of Donald Trump or the US which seems a bit strange as there is still plenty of news coming from there. They only one report borrowed from ITV (and namechecked as such), but nice to see a a pre-recorded interview between the ITV correspondent and the presenter in Glasgow included as part of that.
Graphics and music-wise, I like both (really like the music and think the titles are alright), but am not entirely convinced they fit. Rather than having footage in virtual space for the titles, cuts between the footage full screen would have looked better IMO.
On the whole, a decent product from STV - would like to see them go the full hour at some point though.

Away from STV News Tonight, I've been thinking about STV2 as a second national channel for Scotland, and I can't decide what I think about it. On the one hand, it's very good to have a high amount of Scotland-produced new content every day, but I think it puts the main STV channel a slightly weird position. IMO, the best way forward for the channel would for it to be akin to BBC Two Scotland (rather than ITV2!), producing local content in addition to (rather than replacing) decent levels of local content on STV (which looking at the schedules there hasn't been too much of recently), along with programmes from ITV/the archives (perhaps some of the original programming for ITV Four could work?).

Im sure someone on here has read all the OFCOM paperwork about the local tv station scheme and obviously there was a glaring loop hole that allowed them to essentially end the local Scottish channels and just create a 2nd Scottish "national" channel. Seems like it defeated the purpose of the local channel scheme completely. How was this able to happen?

There is at least FIVE new idents on the channel:
* Young kids
* Buildings
* Buildings V2
* other people ( which are also used on the channel promo. )
* Other people V2.
Along with the existing five main idents which have also been transferred.
