Fairly recently I watched the 1800 Scotland Today via Sky Other Channels. The AA-sponsored weather forecast which followed showed a map of
all
of Scotland, rather than just
central
Scotland?
Why is this? Is it because SMG produces just one forecast, but puts different opening/closing sequences for Scottish and Grampian? Even if this is the case, why mention the south when it's in Border's patch?????
Well these days SMG really only runs one ITV service that happens to be branded as Scottish TV if you live in central Scotland or Grampian TV if you live in the north. Apart from regional news, there doesn't seem to be any differences whatsoever between them. It's likely that only one weather forecast was produced for both Scottish and Grampian. There is also probably a lot of overlap with Border and, having watched GMG North ITV, if I had to choose between Scottish and Border, I'd be choosing Scottish, hence the coverage of southern Scotland aswell.
I've picked up Dave's suggeation in another thread, and although I haven't got the time to spend a whole weekend on any particular channel, I AM hitting all the 6pm local news programmes in succession. A full review when I finally finish.
But, the purpose of the post, I watched Grampian the other evening and was suprised by exactly the same, a forecast for the whole country, not just the north.
You're obviously right, Chris, and SMG just provide one forecast. Perhaps they ought to sell it to Border Scotland as well.

I don't think people in Cumbria and Man would like a map of Scotland.

Maybe an idea, although as far as I know Border doesn't have any weather bulletins as such, they are incorporated into the news bulletins old-style (although they don't, thankfully, put pictures up that kids draw and send in as their weather backdrops as used to happen )
Border weather is about the worst I've ever seen! They really need to get an in-vision weather presenter, symbols that actually look good and don't stay static (ie all that ever happens is that the map behind the symbols changes - they don't even bother moving them around a bit from region to region!). Also, they do the weather for 'Dumfries and Galloway', which is a huge region! - there are obvious weather variations across the region that aren't accounted for. This, of course, might be solved if they dropped the idea of the pre-recorded news opt-out and started broadcasting a completely different, live service to southern Scotland (or, which many people I'm sure would prefer, the boundaries could be changed so that the Scottish Border viewers get Scottish instead!).

The Scottish & Grampian TV weather forecasts begin with a look at Scotland as a whole and then Scottish TV 'fly' across central Scotland and Grampian TV 'fly' across northern Scotland using the 3D map. It makes sense to include a full Scottish forecast as people are travelling between the two regions all the time.

Indeed - although quite regularly it's funny to hear the border weather person just read the same forecast for every region, ie rain and 8c, but trying to change the words so she doesn't have to say the same thing over and over again.
It also amuses me that border weather does that lovely thing... 'Good evening from a small village in Dumfries and Galloway. It was sunny in Gatehouse today with a few showers later on.' What a way to start a weather forecast!

Grampian & Scottish get their weather from Weathernews. They use the Worldview software.
