IVC couldn't be done here as Bruce would've been in a booth, and not in the IVC studio. So, hence the use of the studio slide.

Why would he have had to have been in a booth. Surely he'd just sit in the studio and read the advert voiceover live from there?

Then why not go to the IVC studio after the advert? Seems strange to go to a slide if the person is in the IVC studio.

Possibly some sort of rule about distinguishing between an advert and a non-advert? Certainly I can't think of any technical reason, if the acoustics in the studio are good enough for continuity announcements they're good enough for advert voice overs

I'm sure Tony Currie will know

1) There was no booth. Just a studio, with a camera and a couple of microphones.
2) Announcers only appeared in vision for a link of more than 15 seconds. Anything shorter was done over a slide.
3) 7 second slide commercials were almost all done live.

Cheers for clearing that up Tony. I have to admit, I like the idea of introducing the programme over a slide of the studio buildings, if the studio building is something that is worthy of a good photo. I'm thinking here of Granada at Quay Street, Manchester, or the Yorkshire Television studios at Leeds. Obviously the company logo would've had to be in the shot on the building as well, though at Manchester, the red GRANADA TV lettering was something you couldn't miss!

When I was growing up as a kid in the 80s (remember those times folks!), I was fascinated by the bits in between the shows, and always liked the photo of the STV studios coming up to introduce the next programme. I suppose that, as the STV idents (especially the thistle) in the 80s could be a bit long if animated, a quick link could be done over a slide of the studios.

Ah, see what we miss nowadays!

Where I worked Tony the slide vo commercials were voice recorded onto an audio cart machine with the other track on the cart being used to automatically change the slides (in sync) on the slide scanner - a bit of a mixture of the stv method. The announcers were carefully rostered so that they were not performing ca duties if they were also due to be on a slide/vo comm.

Interesting. I didn't think the IBA allowed live commercials (on radio or TV ?)

Well, I don't recall any evidence Southern, LWT, or Thames did it down here, in fact
I seem to recall they usually used a different CA for the ads, to the one who was on duty.

There was another IBA rule that anyone in a show, couldn't appear in any ads during, before and after the programme ? TVS had an announcer called Jenny Clulow, and there was a bit of a kurfuffle over the Cointreau ads that ran in the 80s. Either she couldn't
be on duty if they were being shown, or vice versa because she was the actress in the ads ?

That rule was still in place until a few years ago. The paperwork for each advert contained a list of those appearing in them for that reason

LWT used their building in their continuity a lot in the early 80's - behind the announcer, on slides, at their Friday startup and animated in promos

It seems LWT and STV are the only two who did this?
