They're hardly doing anything radical - they've bought the rights to show something that has been shown already on several channels in the past, in the hope that it will make them look a bit cooler. It's not like they've taken a risk on something new.

It's part of a production deal though, so presumably STV will be producing some original comedy in the near future which is always a risk.

Well yes but "something else" doesn't necessarily equal better does it ?

Not sure why it's being so applauded here, when all they seem to be doing is opting out of some premium ITV content (ie. FA Cup, Lewis) with some cheap films and acquisitions.

wknd@STV is just 15 year old cartoons interspersed with some excruciatingly bad links. Can't see it being relevant to any of today's kids.

Dumping Lewis for 25 year old films with a "Scottish" link - Are Scottish viewers prepared to put up with any old rubbish, just because it's Scottish ? A few weeks back they screened Gregory's Girl, a 28 year old film in the Sunday night Lewis slot, the film got 178,000 viewers (8%), and was the least watched terrestrial channel at the time.

South Park - fine ok, well ITV1 just show films then anyway. But they've acquired a US animation, whoopy doo. This isn't distinctive regional broadcasting, any of the hundreds of channels on the EPG could have acquired this series.

I can only speak for myself on this one - but I've really been enjoying these movies and accompanying interview packages. I'm watching Heavenly Pursuits at the moment - and normally I wouldn't be watching STV on a Sunday afternoon at all.

I like South Park. Distinctively Scottish it isn't, but not everything has to be Weirs Way.

Its about bums on seats, and they've got mine with these two specific changes - but then I find football and Lewis a bore. The 5.30 show is another that I'll usually watch if I'm in and waiting for the news.

I'll be the first to complain when their changes bother or disappointment me, but so far, so good.

Well said Square Eyes. You are right about the type of shows that STV are playing but if all the regions (not just the 3 we are left with now ) were able to opt-out of the network and change the line-up to make it more "regional" for the viewer with the latest local programs it would make the channel (ITV) feel like it isn't from London. That's what STV are trying to do.

I totally agree with that thought. That is what made the old ITV so successful - completely the best of British the best from each region being shown and being popular.

Yes the old 15 TV Station had its fair share of afilures but in general each region tried to make the best so it would be shown nationally, whilst local programming/scheduling catered for local tastes and not the generic so-called "national" taste. People in London have differing tastes to those in Birmingham, same applies for Manchester, Leeds, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, etc.....

What ITV Network now has is ITV plc that produces over 90% of network programmes but all the ideas are based in one office with one persons office and not a group of people for all the regions, so the hit and miss will have a much higher percentage of misses (just like the other networks) that days of yore. Its now all based on the commisionaers taste of certain genres rather than a majority vote type situation.

That is the problem - they're ditching the higher rated (and presumably pricier stuff) rather than programming which would be less missed. Lewis especially surprised me, but even though the reasoning for the FA Cup is clear, it is still a competition which has a healthy following outside of England and it's not like STV are over run with sports content. There would be no reason to object if they were showing the Scottish Cup instead for example.

While we are talking about STV and opts outs, what will they do now the FA Cup is overrunning? Find an old show to put on until the ITV National News?
