TT ... You simply haven't a clue about radio wave propogation, if you did you would realise why completing whole regions in isolation would have prolonged the process and indeed have meant some areas going without service for a period of time too.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to have completed STV Central in April, before doing all of Central, followed by all of Yorkshire, and finally all of Anglia?

Before you go any further, have a play of this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/switchover-game/switchovergame.swf

It's very simplified and isn't exactly how things actually happened in real life, but it will give you an idea as to the issues in planning the switchover process

I have played with that game. It says Belmont must be converted before Tacolneston, but Belmont has already switched and Tacolneston isn't due to switch until November.

Interestingly it says Emley Moor and Sutton Coldfield must be switched together; indeed they will both switch together next week.

So what's the problem?

Having played the game several times, I don't see how switching one transmitter to digital can completely knock out a neighbouring one.

For example, in that game, switching Sandy Heath knocks out Oxford. Why? Is Oxford a relay of Sandy Heath?

You still don't get propogation effects do you TT?

Can you provide an explanation here?

Also I don't see why that game says Winter Hill and Llanddona must be converted with each other. Being so far apart, how can one affect the other?

They're not that far apart and there's a big expanse of sea water between them,, therefore no hills to stop the signals

Moel-y-Parc is much nearer to Winter Hill than Llanddona, and that doesn't seem to be affected by switching Winter Hill.

Funnily enough that game says that Carmel must be switched after Huntshaw Cross.

You'll find that it has to do with co-channelling pre/post switchover frequencies as much as geographic distance.

For instance Waltham had to switch before Sutton Coldfield to release UHF channels 42 and 45 for Sutton Coldfield's commercial multiplexes.
