STV will make television history when it becomes the first broadcaster in the UK to televise a Scottish court hearing live and in full.

STV News cameras will be operating inside court one at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to report on proceedings brought on by the legal challenge to the election of Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael as MP for Orkney and Shetland.

The case will examine Mr Carmichael's conduct over the leak of a memo about First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s meeting with a French ambassador.

The case, which could see Mr Carmichael removed as MP for Orkney and Shetland, will be heard by judges Lady Paton and Lord Matthews in the Election Court, which will sit for the first time in Scotland since 1965 on Monday, September 7 from 10.30am.

As well as broadcasting full coverage of the court sitting on the STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh channels, STV will stream the proceedings live on the STV website.

The STV Player live stream will allow those with internet access to watch the hearing anywhere in the United Kingdom, most notably Mr Carmichael’s constituents in Orkney and Shetland, many of whom live up to 400 miles away and for whom a trip to Edinburgh takes more than 17 hours by ferry and road.

Gordon Macmillan, STV's Head of News, said: "STV News is delighted to have the opportunity to provide this ground-breaking broadcast. We were the first broadcasters to film sentencing in a criminal trial in 2012. This is a significant advance in the televising of the Scottish courts and it will provide an important live insight – most especially for Mr Carmichael’s constituents - into the legal process in this case."

Over the next week, STV’s technical team will install special remotely controlled cameras in court one in Parliament Square. The broadcaster will also provide television pictures from the Election Court to other broadcasters and media organisations.

The court has also agreed that journalists will be allowed to use social media site Twitter to send live text updates.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service said: “The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service held constructive discussions with all parties involved, in reaching an agreement to broadcast the Election Court and we are pleased STV has agreed to facilitate this. Guidelines have been put in place to allow proceedings to be streamed live in this exceptional case, which will enable constituents in Orkney and Shetland and across the whole of the UK to view the trial.”

The court sitting will be broadcast live on STV Edinburgh and STV Glasgow which can be found at Freeview channel 23, Sky channel 117 and Virgin channel 159 in both broadcast areas. The live coverage will be available to watch online at stv.tv.

A special edition of STV’s flagship news and current affairs programme Scotland Tonight will report on the court proceedings that evening.

4 camera, and live broadcast on Local TV channels, I wonder if the daytime broadcast of the STV channels will end up being filled up with court cases??

I didn't, but while looking for it on the STV website, I've discovered that the sentencing in a murder case at the High Court of Glasgow will be recorded tomorrow by Sky News and shared as pool material:

edit: here's today's Election Court programme. There's a full 30 minutes of analysis first: http://player.stv.tv/episode/349r/alistair-carmichael-court-hearingcarmichael-in-court-stv-news/

So in summary, court hearings make for very boring TV. And therefore ideal content for Local TV.

It really is painfully dull, mind you it might be extremely useful informing viewers how real court actually work.

Here's the thing though: it's a boring case. Doesn't mean court TV is boring.

Scottish Government will NEVER allow Live TV crew into a murder trail etc. It has happened a TV crew have been allowed in to recorded for a Documentary which would be broadcast some time after the trail had ended
