It was nice there also throw up you reading the main news for Scotland Today, back in 84-85 If anyone wondering why it says "West" he was in glasgow, after a few mins it would switch to East news to the other presenter reading in Edinburgh I believe. before handing over to the main programmme.

Celebrating the 60th birthday is a little complicated for STV, because:
a) Showing old idents would involve showing idents which are completely irrelevant to a hefty chunk of the audience, who received Grampian. It would also involve putting the wrong name up on screen, because for a lot of its life the station was known as Scottish Television and is now shortened to STV - this is not like ITV.
b) Showing old programming would involve the same problem, because a lot of it would only have been shown in the former Scottish Television region.
c) There's still a lot of ill-feeling about the loss of Grampian amid some in the north.

Under those circumstances I can understand why they went for a muted celebration on the main channel, albeit wish they'd worked on a way round it. On the other hand, STV2 has a miniscule audience and a similarly miniscule budget, so I imagine the opportunity to fill some hours with some nostalgia programming which is already sitting in the vaults would have been leapt at. It also means the station can say it's not ignored the anniversary.

The thing is it is 60th years since all of the central belt got commerical tv, that includes Perth and Dundee, so a good chunk of grampian have had tv for 60th on Ch3.

Point A: but there could have easily split transmissions, there had it often enough back in the 90s so what wrong doing it now having to different idents play out? Then there could have done the same in 2021 Wink

Point B: nearly all the programme STV broadcast ended up on Grampian and Vice verse. Yes there were some never screen on either channel, Throw out some Andy party and i'm sure people will be happy. Smile Also there were claims when Grampian moved offices around 1999/2000 alot of tapes were skipped. I doubt it was programme tapes, Even STV didn't keep some of it programme like there 250 Here hears but only 50 are around, I think most of Now you see it wasn't kept. Even garnock way never made it, So you have to ask why would Grampian keep hold of Pennywise? or play better squash, to find a job. Pin Money? I know few copies were kept but most of series well??? Andy party was in 1979-81..

Point C: That the way of TV today, if it wasnt for STV we would have ITV and I bet we would have no scotland today, and ONE new programme covering everyone. I agree STV is not like its self back in the 80s or 90s. I would like to see more local programmes and some more network content like anther gameshow or drama, STV needs to get some dramas going again.

Taking of anniversaries, it's also just over 10 years since Cowcaddens was bulldozed to the ground.

They seem to have loaded up quite a few of the classic idents on to the playout system for STV2. Caught these ones kicking about earlier, in addition to several more variants of the montage idents with different programme clips on.

Really weird to hear a continuity announcer actually referring to station idents on air!

They could surely have shown the celebratory idents on just the Scottish TV part of STV, with pre-recorded normal idents going out on the Grampian part.

I remember that Yorkshire managed this during Tyne Tees's 40th birthday, when they had special announcements and idents, despite them normally doing joint continuity by that point.

Yes, it's a shame there's no celebration on the main channel - and furthermore, the best the Grampian area can hope for is a feature or features on their versions of the STV News at Six.

With Tyne Tees back in 1999, there was already split continuity going out in the two regions. Yet I'm sure it would have been possible to do this on STV, with the former Grampian area getting standard idents and different trailers.

She's right, that 2000 package still looks great today.

I love how cinematic it feels, kinda proves the 'people idents' when done correctly (with the right soundtrack) can be good.
