Yes, it's not TV but there's not much going on in the TV pres arena at the moment, save for the exciting new background image on Daybreak, obviously.

Anyway, I've just discovered that Optimum Releasing, the UK film distribution arm of StudioCanal, has this month adopted the moniker of its parent company and with it comes this rather beautiful new ident. The only thing I'm not taken by is the update to the logo, which seems to have lost its uniqueness as a result of over-tinkering. Ah well.

A bit more info on the rebrand can be found here.

To the point of the post: as it transpires, the ident was produced using an elaborate, physical model consisting of 25 glass panels. How strikingly different it looks in comparison to the established "identikit CGI mixed with dreary live action" set up favoured by TV nowadays.

But what do you think? Would you like to see this sort of identity attempted again on the smaller screen (see how I linked it back there)?

Answers on a postcard, etc, etc.

I would love it if BBC One had an ident like that, it is simply amazing. I agree with you about the logo though. Mind you, the other Cannal channels have some wonderful logos now compared to before. I will pic some old leaflets I have tomorrow and stick them up for comparison.

The "Canal" no longer matches the Canal+ logo, which is odd. You'd think that in French-speaking markets at least, the link would be important.

I'm not convinced something like this would work for BBC One now, but that's just personal preference. For loads of other channels, though, it definitely would. This is stunning, and made even more so with the knowledge that it's a physical model, not just CGI.

Of course not, it's made for the cinema not TV - two totally different things that require a different treatment

Of course, I'm not advocating that this piece, so obviously designed for cinema, or something like it could be instantaneously transferred to screen as is but are you suggesting that the basis of its well-crafted concept, high production and flawless execution could not be adopted, adapted and expanded into a relevant, all-round package for a channel such as Sky Arts, BBC4, Film4 or perhaps even a more mainstream offering wanting to take a different track?

That's quite a depressing thought, if so.

Imagine the 1991 BBC1 ident, made of real glass hanging from fishing lines!

I take it you are also heading down to the glazier to make him cut glass in the shape of continents?
