Has anyone else seen that there is a virtual tour of Newsround on the BBC website?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/static/behind_the_scenes/nr_studio_qtvr.stm

It shows how Newsround, Breakfast, Newsnight and Working Lunch all share the same studio at TVC.

Does anyone know why Newsround doesn't use the generic look? Couldn't they light the breakfast walls in lavendar and throw white breakup gobos over them ala Breakfast? I think that would look cool!

I thought it was quite fascinating!

Cheers,
Peter.

Couple of possible reasons why Newsround haven't moved to the Generic News look.

1. Not every news programme has - Newsnight, albeit made by the Current Affairs bit of News, has retained its own look (apart from Newsnight Scotland's opt - which comes from the Reporting Scotland set)

2. Newsround is not made by BBC News. The production team and reporters work for BBC Childrens. However Childrens pay BBC News Resources for access to the studio, graphics and editing resources used by BBC News.

Newsround are therefore not managed by BBC News, so they have no compulsion to follow the brand. Given that Newsround try to make the news as accessible as possible to their target audience of younger viewers, it makes sense to have a set / titles which is slightly more in keeping with the shows that their audience would normally watch.

Personally I liked the previous look more - where the headlines flew round the globe in little TV sets. (One of the most impressive live headline sequences I have seen!) However I think this was dropped, as it was too complex, when Newsround stopped having a separate director, and moved to the producer of the show also directing. (There are fewer camera shots and studio interviews since this happened it seems)

Awww, shucks! I'm blushing!
Glad you liked it Smile

It wasn't too complex (IMHO anyhow!) - all the elements were fired off electronically by GPIs controlled by a PC. All the vision mixer needed to do was select the next source to go inside the TVs.

The sequence was a mix of CSO & Moving Matte keying on top of one another. The sources for the vision mixer came from CRV and Charisma, as well as a hard-disk video player

Doesn't Dispatch Box also come from the same studio (00.00hrs BBC2). It seems that they use the same set but different chairs, purple lighting and a couple of boards with the 'Westminster' Shield on them. The three guests sit around the 'coffee table' off the 'soft' set, the 'carpet' from the newsdesk has been pushed up to the 'soft' carpet. The presenter sits on the edge of this on a swivel chair (isolated on an island from the guests). The N24 update desk is sat to the side of the presenter with newspaper cuttings pinned to it and forms part of a discussion with a fourth guest. The lighting is dark - a large contrast to the lighting in 5%1/2 hours later!!
