Mike Smith still has a lot of respect and admiration for Noel Edmonds doesn't he? It's a shame their working relationship ended the way it did.

ISTR that Mike Smith was Noel Edmunds' chauffeur in the early 70s. I think Edmunds helped Smith into broadcasting, getting him a job at Capital in the late 70s. Possibly the Tim Blackmore connection ?

Anyone else notice the subtle plug for smitty's company on his shirt: http://www.flyingtv.co.uk/

Would you use a helicopter company that he ran seeing as he had a dreadful accident that nearly killed him and Sarah Greene?

I know that Mike was a huge Noel fan and listened to his radio shows religiously. It was Smitty's peformances on The Late Late Breakfast Show that helped him get the Radio 1 breakfast show gig, and for one period he actually topped Noel's record audience. But Noel's ratings for the breakfast show stayed consistently high whereas Mike Smith's ratings tumbled and went to a record low.

Had an idea once. All the reals of House Party must still be around right? why not repeat them all?? Not on a Saturday night of course but on a repeat channel somewhere? I mean there millions of shows they don't repeat ever

He doesn't fly them. Besides, one accident 15 years ago shouldn't be a factor.

G-PIXX has produced some fantastic footage, it's a great little thing (although it;s not allowed to fly over land in Central London)

I was being slightly facetious in my reply.

Didn't Noel have a helicopter hiring company? I think his company was used for Live Aid that's why he managed to get on the show and introduce one of the acts because he was just around.

Actually I said a similar thing to a former colleague of mine to wind him up just before he went up in the copter!

Not sure if it was his company, but it was Noel who flew Phil Collins to Heathrow so he could catch the concorde over to Philadelphia

I didn't know that. I know Noel had a charity helicopter firm called Airborne which commendably gave rides to wheelchair bound children so that instead of looking up at the world they were looking down on it. Unfortunately a child was killed in a crash and the whole thing stopped.

I was looking at the titles of the show and wondered when the great Mike Yarwood would be featured. He used to get Morecambe and Wise sized ratings for some of his shows.

No I meant that Noel was on the phone to Michael Lush in the show and we realise now that, THAT moment sealed the poor gentleman's fate.

Indeed. And what gives it an even more tragic irony is that when Noel spun the wheels, for comedic effect he used to give them a little extra nudge after they'd stopped spinning, in order to select a different contestant or stunt to those which had been randomly selected. I don't know for sure if Noel did the extra nudges that week, but I remember him doing it most weeks as it was a very popular joke with the audience.

Doesn't Noel (& Smitty) have a downer on their material being repeated, apart from odd clips?(Ref UK Gold TOTP repeats)

Asa:- I think it was me (long time ago now!) that posted the continuity link to MHP Private Parts.

As for the fall out between Noel Edmonds and Mike Smith. I posted this to DS last night from the unauthorised Noel Edmonds book...

Quote:

It was like the Wham theory in the better star wanted better things alone. All started after the tragic stunt on the Late Late Breakfast Show. When Noel came back with the regular Christmas show. It would feature Noel in the title's name "Christmas Morning With Noel" Noel's co-star, Mike Smith would not be seen live on air with him.

It was at this point that he realised Noel was edging him out. They always did things together but now would only seem to have pre recorded stuff only. Noel's reasoning was that he felt that it would revive too many memories of the past.

Mike felt let down by Noel and claimed to experience contractual problems with the BBC. Noel just simply just left Mike in the lurch. Even with the final three months of his contract, the BBC tried to not pay what was left on the contract due to the lack of appearances. Noel just ran for cover and those were defining moments of what he's like. I could not believe what he did.

Put The Telly On
Ironic as didn't Noel and Mike Smith share the 7pm slot on BBC1 in the early nineties (i.e. when Wogan/Eldorado ended)? I vaguely remember Mike Smith presenting a show called Thats Showbusiness and of course Noel hosted Telly Addicts.
