My sympathys go out to his family. Yes the man might have been mad in what he was doing but in my views he was an entertainer and had a real care of the wildlife.

That's not what MediaGuardian is reporting...
I bow to the superior knowledge of the Grauniad.
My info comes from the Aussie state broadcaster's website ABC Online ( abc.com.au) , the press conference his producer gave on Sky News and from an aussie mate who rang this morning with all the reports from down under...( listened to them all while on the phone!).
But ofcourse I am sure the Guardian knows best.
Sad but hardly a great shock - his luck was bound to run out sometime or later. Luckily it wasn't when the idiot was dangling his baby over crocodiles.
Oh I don't know ...quite a shock for anyone to get stung while snorkelling ....and millions do every year on the barrier reef .......it's only the 2nd or 3rd reported stingray death in years and years apparently ( according to the aussie media again)
As I said ...could have happened to anyone.

but the reports I've been reading state that the stingray is a harmless creature unless threatened, implying that he must have been doing something with it rather than innocently snorkelling close by.
According to his producer Steve swam overhead ....and the ray was beneath him. They think the ray looked up and thought - hello there's a bigger fish than me and zapped him. This wasn't a scuba dive down and prod the fish moment I gather.

Finger up the back passage - I'm telling you now.
I know his shows were successful around the world, and that he put a lot of the profits into good causes; but his whole shtick was to pick things up by the tail and then say, "Strewth, this one is a little angry".
never let the facts get in the way of a good story eh?
Well according to the other story links on the BBC online pages, it wouldn't be the first time that the crew's tapes have been investigated to see if he had broken rules about interacting with wildlife.
