On the current fonts used by broadcasters...

BBC - hate it soooo much
Sky - hate it and hated it for ten years
ITV - not bad
Channel 4 - preferred the older ones but pretty good
CNN - quite like it actually
Al Jazeera - not that keen

We've seen a crisis engulf TV idents with bland mediocrity in recent years (with the exceptions of BBC2 and ITV).

Are we now in the midst of the next TV Forum crisis with the state of broadcasters' fonts?

I truly despise that reith font...

I think Sky's font is not really bad at all

Channel 4 - I think it's still lovely

When you say fonts, are you referring to just the ones used in idents?

While (current) Horseferry/Chadwick are nice enough, I really rated Channel 4's (former) C4 Headline typeface (below).

*

When it came into use, I found it modern, characterful, and a real change from anything used on any other (especially terrestrial) channels.

When you saw it, you were under no illusion which channel you were watching.

I still love it.

Sky and ITV are good and feel modern. I don't like BBC Reith.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, the BBC made a big mistake with that reith font

Yes and no, valley.

I more mean the fonts used in general presentation, on news & sport programmes, weather forecasts, on their websites, and so on.
AndrewPSSP, valley and Roger Darthwell gave kudos

-sees Reith is now hated-

Would you prefer them going back to Gill by any chance?
AndrewPSSP, Roger Darthwell and Alfie Mulcahy gave kudos

I think the thing with reith is had no character (dreadful pun intended)

The serif version is nice but the sans serif version is so bland, it’s like verdana or one of those generic typefaces that come with windows.

i preferred Gill, but Gotham or Futura look great onscreen too. Helvetica for body text on the web I think.

Maybe a new font altogether that leans a bit more towards Gill in terms of inspiration?

The fact that it was applied e v e r y w h e r e sure helped too. From the news headlines to the labels on the grocery items in the Big Brother house. Loved it.

I personally quite like Reith (especially its serif incarnation - please don’t hit me), but it’s half arsed roll-out is quite frustrating as it’s preventing it from creating that consistency that it was commissioned for in the first place.
