Who was responsible for the mess of last night? A format perfectly fine for 15-odd years just had to be tweaked with, didn't it?

In case you didn't see normally the participants (or kids in the case of last night) sit in the green room while Cat announces each in turn with the number of votes they received.

Well last night someone had the bright idea of sticking all the kids on stage in a row while Cat said, "it's not you" cue kid walking off stage or "it might be you" (sound familiar?) and the kid walks over to Cat. This carried on down the line until there was two left then one went so the other went over to Cat with the other two then one more left then Cat said "both of you polled over 50,000 votes" then the winner was announced.

What a poor way of doing it. The winner didn't get to do the walk from the green room to the studio with a big pat on the back from a load of people, didn't get to walk through the doors again and the whole result was flat. Why couldn't we see the exact number of votes each got?

It was pure Pop Idol style and poor at that. I'm by no means a regular to the show or a big viewer but to see a show tweaked in such a pointless way was IMO really bad.

George Formby. The kid was the "wildcard" entry from the whole series and funnily enough it was "George Formby Day" yesterday as well.

I think they might have done it that way not to upset the kids. Imagine how the kid with the lowest amount of votes would feel.

In a way I think it's good how they walked off the stage when they were told it wasn't them. You could kind of see a few of the kids were about to cry. It saves them the embaressment of crying on national TV. However, they should have just walked out of the green room.

I think it's more a case of not revealing the number of votes. Now getting over 50,000 will win it for you - a few years ago you'd have been bottom of the poll!

And Stars in their Eyes Kids has to be the worst show on TV - it's worse than some of the stuff we laugh at on Tarrant on TV. A nine year old kid doing George Formby impressions is just wrong!

As a series, on the whole, it was very good watching these under sixteens out-performing some of the adult versions of Stars In Their Eyes.

Joss Stone and Noddy Holder were particularly good. I didn't really rate the Lemar and i'm sure all the old women watching voted for George Formby! As coincidence has it - it was George Formby day yesterday - would that have had any impact on the result ? I would think(hope) not.

Surely the Geroge Formby fan-club can't be that big and dig that deep into their pockets to phone up a premium phone rate numerous times?

The grand finale was a bit of a let down and didn't feel as if it was that grand with Kat just announcing the results as Asa decribed above. It felt heartless and built up NO emotion or excitement at all! The only think to say was that it might have been done that way to save the kids tears and also the price of an expensive voting board display!

Thinking back to some of the adult Stars In Their Eyes finals - i'm sure people have won in the past with just over 100,000 votes - so the top 2 getting over 50,00 each may not be that bad especially as viewing figures for this series have probably been around 50% to that of when 'Stars' was at it height on a Saturday night.

I prefer the normal version of Stars in Their Eyes to be honest so havent watched the kids version. It does sound like a poor way of doing the result show though.

Oh well next week the Celebrity version is back.

Well it just proves (this goes for the main series as well) that shows like Pop Idol and X Factor have taken the glitz and glamour away from the voting and popularity of Stars in their Eyes.

I remember when 'Stars' used to be a huge family event. In house orchestra, Matthew Kelly in a waistcoat and bowtie and the computer generated scoreboard etc.

To backup Asa's point. Its a shame they've had to change the format used for over 15 years just to compete with the reality talent TV genre.

Anyone know if there is going to be another series of the regular show?

There's always two different classes of participant on this show though

You've got the kids doing a current artist, who obviously like that artist and want to be there themselves

and you've got the strange kids doing some song from 30 years ago. There's obviously a 'pushy mother' in the background somewhere as these kids wouldn't have even heard of these singers!

I remember the Final's during the mid 1990's, it was always broadcast Live and every so often they would go to some presenter at the BT Tower to see how voting is coming along, then as mentioned to the massive board with the results.

As for the show itself, it should have ended years ago, they don't appear to do the normal series anymore, they've just over done on the Celebrity Specials and the Kids series, Matthew Kelly left at the right time IMO, the show should have left with him. The show felt more eventful, it wasn't overkill like it is now, and they made it felt like Saturday night TV, with people like Granada's Andrew Brittain saying "LIVE FROM MANCHESTER...." and they'd even fly to the Granada Studios.

Though your average Joe doesn't give a damn as they like to see kids singing alá the normal Stars In Their Eyes, though one wonders what would Leslie Crowther make of these pathetic specials if he was still alive today.

I saw the final, and wondered why they had scrapped showing the total number of votes. There was nothing wrong with that format which was really the best part of the finals.

The whole business of "it's not you" or "it might be you" that was used on Saturday was a letdown. And no walking back out through the doors for the winner like it used to be. The Stars In Their Eyes of today is a shadow of its former self.
