It was a 'family' ident.

Yep and it did have an accompanying clock!

Once that was dropped the plan was to use a still of an ident rather than a moving one... as shown when the Queen Mum died... and yes, if that had happened a day earlier we'd have got a still of the balloon!

Don't the BBC just use their "BBC Clouds" nowadays?

If we're talking about the same thing, the BBC Clouds aren't intended for broadcast and really should never be seen on screen.

As you probably know, Scotland, Wales and NI, rather than opt in and out of a "dirty" network feed, nowadays opt in and out of "Clean Feeds" of London's output - ie the only things on it are the raw programmes, no trails, no idents, no voiceovers, no credit squeezes.

So, between one programme and the next, the BBC Clouds still is sent down the clean feed, so that the Nations aren't looking at a black screen.

Yes it does show its face on TV occasionally, but only when something hasn't gone according to plan; for instance, if the network director in London hasn't enabled the relevant flag in their schedule which sends a programme down the Clean Feed, and the Nations join the programme on the CF source, then you'll see the clouds.

But it's certainly not an official graphic, in fact I believe the clouds themselves started life as a snap taken by one of the Northern Ireland continuity directors in his back garden in Donaghadee, Co Down...

No, the BBC might as well become some sort of mouthpiece for the royal family.

As I understand it, Diana wasn't meant to get the "Diana treatment" - it was a circumstance which wasn't quite covered in the plan with her unusual circumstances as a divorced royal, so the stations played it by ear.
