Just been watching an old HTV ident following the death of Princess Di- which showed the HTV gold logo on a black background with no music.
I know the BBC kept Dancers for special events (Queen Mother death/Pope dying for example). What would we see if something happened say tonight from the BBC- or what would we have seen from the old ITV regions for example?

Don't the BBC just use their "BBC Clouds" nowadays?
On the BBC, had an extremely major death happened after the 1997 rebrand but before the dancers era, I suspect we'd have had the mute BBC 'ribbons' ident on both channels (becoming just 'BBC' instead of BBC1 & 2) with the accompanying clock?

The clouds have been replaced by something similar to that of the new generic ident, using the glass cubes AFAIK.
At the moment, for the initial announcement into "BBC Television from London" mode we'd probably see a slowed-down version of the generic BBC ident, probably with a more sombre soundtrack (if any). Into a funeral, it would almost certainly be Helicopter on BBC1 and Mirror A on BBC2.

Indeed, the last 'family ident' (known as such because it would be used on occasions where BBC 1, 2, World and Prime would broadcast a single schedule) was the BBC ribbons without music. As far as I know it was never broadcast. I don't recall an accompanying 'ribbons' clock, but I suspect there was one. There certainly was a clock to accompany the ident on the youtube clip of the Diana death, but I cannot remember if it was actually shown during joint programming. As far as one can tell from the way the BBC dealt with Princess Margaret and The QM, current thinking is for the individual channels to introduce the news reports over their own, static idents.

BBC Ribbons was the intro used on BBC videos and DVDs it was not an ident on TV.
It was replaced in 2008 with BBC cubes
