This is the original shape of the BBC South region. This is no longer used at all (regardless of whether you're in Oxfordshire or the 'old' South region).
http://home.freeuk.net/robfrowen/bbcsouth/news/bbcsouthtodayox01.jpg
This is the 'new' South region (with Oxfordshire added). It is seen by viewers in both Oxfordshire and the 'old' South region.
Not only does the region now stick out further to the north, but if you look closely, you'll see it also doesn't go as far east as before (that's because East Sussex has been pinched from South Today to join Kent, forming the Tunbridge Wells based SE region)
Although Oxfordshire joining and East Sussex leaving happened months apart, the South Today titles were only altered once, showing both cahnges - so for a few months, viewers in East Sussex were still receiving South Today but were not shown in the titles!
http://home.freeuk.net/robfrowen/bbcsouth/news/bbcsouthtodayox01a.jpg
This is only ever seen by viewers in Oxfordshire (it is the shape of just Oxfordshire). It is obviously incorporated into the opt-out somehow.

I don't live in the South Today region, and have never seen it, but by putting knowledge from many TV-logo enthusiasts' websites together, I think I've worked it out perfectly (but don't rely on this).
Many regions (and UK Today) record their 1800 and 1815 headline inserts at about 1750, instead of doing them live. South Today is no exception, but they have more things to record than other regions.
They record three headline inserts – two different inserts for 1800 (which one you see depends on whether you're in Oxfordshire or the old South region), and one version for 1815 (seen by viewers in all parts of the new South region) Needless to say the two headlines read in the 1800 inserts are either two Oxfordshire-only stories or two old -South-region-only stories. Whilst the two headlines read in the 1815 insert could be from anywhere in the new South region (although they might happen to be both Oxfordshire or both old-region by chance, depending on where news stories are happening on any given day) All three inserts are presented by the same person - one of the two main presenters for that night.
Also recorded at around 1750 is a simulation of how South Today would open at 1830 – BBC One South balloon ( Now South Today with XXX and XXX or whatever); two main presenters say hello and read only two headlines before opening titles (which are both Oxfordshire-only stories, as used in the Oxfordshire 1800 insert); full opening titles showing entire new South region; two main presenters say something like Also the weather later, but first the main news with XXX .
What is seen at 1830 in old South region – BBC One South balloon ( Now South Today with XXX and XXX or whatever); two main presenters say hello and read four headlines before opening titles (the first two are old -South-region-only stories, as used in the relevant 1800 insert; the latter two are anywhere-in-the- new -South-region stories, as used in the 1815 insert); full opening titles showing entire new South region; two main presenters launch into first story.
What is seen at 1830 in Oxfordshire – Pre-recorded opening (described above) is played out; after verbal handover ( …but first the main news with XXX ) we cut to solitary Oxfordshire-opt-out presenter (who is live, not pre-recorded) who goes through main Oxfordshire stories; after 6/7 minutes it's Now back to XXX and XXX in the main studio ; VERY short closing sequence showing shape of just Oxfordshire with SOUTH TODAY written across; final frame of that sequence remains with vamp playing until we're ready to rejoin main show; Oxfordshire then rejoins main show just as main presenters say Still to come… (the still to come sequence uses the headlines from the 1815 insert – even though viewers in old South region saw them at 1830, Oxfordshire viewers haven't seen them since 1815.
The Oxfordshire opt out comes from a tiny CSO studio down the corridor from the main one in Southampton (rather than studios in Oxford). The CSO background is a photo of the main ST studio's back wall, but with a genuinely live view of Oxford cleverly put in the ‘window'.

Odd as it may seem, the Oxforshire opt-out of South Today also comes from Southampton!
That is insanely odd!
Insane is the right word
I think they are seperate, because after the main headlines, they go to a presenter in a different studio (for me the oxfordshire one) and then when he/she is finished they say 'and now back to the Southampton studio'.

notlive... thats how they make sure the timing is always correct, on the 10 o'clock news.
They always seem to do everything in a certain time gap and never run over except sometimes it does in breakfast.
