I grew up in Essex & Kent but now live in the West Mids. I so wish I could get Meridian Tonight's South East edition on D-Sat
BBC South East Today is so dire I have taken to downloading Meridian Tonight from the ITV Regional News streaming site.
The BBC presenters have no charisma whatsoever. Compare that with Geoff Clarke's cheeky banter with Sue Kinnear and Ian McBride - they are a joy to watch!!
Well I'm from Southend as I always rattle on about, and get LDNDNDN and Look East. Right now though I'm at University and am being tortured by the fact I have no Sky, no rolling news, no clear picture, and worst of all, BBC South East Today.
My opinion is that it is so much less than it could be. The presentation of the programme is a mishmash, the presenters - to me at least - aren't warm and cuddly and sound like they've known each other for about 7 minutes such is the awkwardness. It started with loads of promise but it just ain't working.
They need to do something with the set too. A Midlands Today style sofa would be good - the original set was designed for single presentation & following the messy departure of their only "name", Laurie Meyer, they have changed to double headed presentation, but they can't even both be sat at the desk!!?
They need to have some warm, friendly moments like Geoff & Sue on Meridian Tonight. That's what endears the viewing public to a regional news magazine. I prefer them to the much better known Fred Dineage & Debbie Thrower on the Southampton edition!
I think that there was nothing wrong with Newsroom South East - they should have kept that. Gwenan Edwards and Mike Embley, with Rob Curling doing the sport - classic. Besides most of LDN's presenters were in NSE - Gillian Joseph (sp?), Nina Hossain, Mike Ramsden (I think), and the travel people.
Obviously due to Oxford no longer being in NSE, just cut out that part of the map.

Yes there was, it was a ridiculous region covering a huge area. Dover has nothing to do with Kent and the people in London and the outlying areas didn't care about Kent or Oxford.

LDN is just a development of NSE - in a new building and with a new name and truncated area.... but with roughly the same production team. There is a large amount of continuity between the 2
If you lived in Kent, there was a lot wrong with Newsroom South East - it didn't cover enough of relevance to our area. It was "London Plus" with a name that suggested it wasn't just seen in London. That's why Coast to Coast & then Meridian Tonight from Maidstone always did well in the ratings.
When the Heathfield transmitter transmitted BBC South, you also had the choice of South Today but that didn't cover Kent at all as far as I remember. That was in spite of the fact that my local relay at Wye (well into Kent) rebroadcast BBC South!!

Why don't you all drop a line to the editor of South East Today and tell him how BAD you think the programme is.

The point is I'd rather be watching Meridian Tonight but I don't live in the region any more and can't get the Maidstone edition on Sky, nor am I ever likely to.
South East Today is a poor substitute.

Sean, please do write to the Editor. See my earlier comment.

It's not my regional programme, and I rarely watch it. I don't think it would be too wise e-mailing with criticism a programme that isn't intended for me nor watched by me. All I'm saying my opinion based on the few times I have watched it now that I'm limited to South East Today.
