Too-soft graphics on BBC1 promos?

(November 2017)

I'm sure I'm seeing promos on BBC1 that use graphics that look too soft, like they're upscales from SD rather than native HD.

The endboards for the iPlayer promos look like that, and so have the captions on the Blue Planet II ones I've seen recently.

Does anybody else recognise what I'm talking about?

This was discussed in DS at length a few months ago, it seems that currently most (all ?) promos on BBC TV are still produced in SD, it's a contractual thing apparently.

Linked to the existing Red Bee/Ericsson playout contract, which I believe comes to an end in a matter of weeks?

Wasn't the upgrade to HD supposed to happen last year, but got pushed back?

I recall comments along those lines: where it was believed that trails would switch to HD when trail production moved back in-house, from Red Bee. But trails remained in SD after that move. I believe that the existing playout contract stipulated that trails must be delivered in SD. That contract expires at the end of the year, so it's possible that trails could go HD in 2018.

I know that locally produced BBC NI trails have been in HD for some time. Presumably the same is the case for BBC Wales and BBC Scotland - can't recall?

All BBC NI locally produced trails have been made and transmitted in HD on BBC One NI for the past 5 years. Network trails remain upscaled from SD.

Bumper trails (made by programme production teams) e.g. Match of the Day, etc... are HD. These are either played out live from the programme gallery, or played down the line and lines recorded in HD for later TX.

I’ve seen the same trailers in HD on BBC World News so the trailers themselves are in HD but shown in SD to the license fee payer.

I suspect HD trails on network will launch at the same time as the new BBC playout infrastructure - though o believe that's now not until the new year.
