There is no doubt that the soaps are a central part of British television - generally the stations top performers with guaranteed slots four or five days a week meaning they have a dominant position in the schedules.

So I ask the simple question - have soaps been a good or bad thing for British television?

Overall, I'd say good, they bring in the ratings and are enjoyed by millions. But of course, these days broadcasters seem to forget the people who don't enjoy soaps and usually have nothing else to watch. Thank god for digital tv eh?

Why the hell shouldn't soaps be on at Christmas? No other genre of programming is taken off. Rolling Eyes

I think the over- reliance on soaps is bad for British TV and for the soaps themselves - they are in danger of slaying the goose that lays the golden eggs.

No prime-time soap should be on more than 3 times a week in my view.

So, it's a rule on the Forum not to state agreement with someone now?
