Should the BBC follow suite and move their news to 22:30h ?

If the BBC can manage to keep the 10 News on at 6 days a week so can ITV and thus that's what they should do. Keep News at Ten, make it better, move the ads around, put in more analysis, don't be stupid and just give up on it and move it!

I don't think they're just giving up on it - the move back to NAT never looked particularly permanent. Just looking back at a clip of the ITV report on the return of NAT there's David Liddiment saying, "In the working week it's 10 most nights of the week and the important thing is the news will appear at the end of the big movie or the Morse or the big long-form drama that they're watching so I don't think they'll be any sense where the viewer will feel inconvenienced." Of course, the mish-mash, lowsy timing, is it isn't it? and breaking films with NAT wasn't and isn't ideal.

For me, the News at Ten respect and 'brand name' died in 1999.

Bets on then that the 10.30pm bulletin will be introduced on the first day of the brand new look, early 2004?

If anything, there will probably be more programmes being split into two with this new time, which is what most people care about, not the fact that the news happens to be late on some nights as if all they are watching ITV1 for is the news.

Also, another example of the problems which will be caused. The Frank Skinner show starts on Monday in a 10.30pm slot. Next year, would this type of show be scheduled at 11pm (too late?) or 9.30pm (too early?)

Oh get real, it was their moving their own to ten o'clock and then ITV having to move their own back to ten o'clock that started all of this in the first place.

It would make sense. Let's hope that they take the opportunity to build a new look and a new programme from the ground up this time!

No it was ITV moving their news to 11pm that started all this in the first place, leaving the BBC to fill the vacant 10pm slot.

I think there would be an uproar if the BBC dared to move their news again. They would be stupid if they even considered it.

It's just not fair on the audince if the two main rival channels go head to head with their main evening news, the bbc should stick with the 10 o' clock news, it gives itv1 more room for drama and movie premieres, they should start them at 8.30pm in the future, as most drama and movie premieres are on for two hours.

That's fine but 8.30pm is pre-watershed remember.

I think the following would be a good schedule for ITV1 (HTV Wales region)

6.00 HTV News
6.30 ITV Evening News
7.00 Emmerdale (Mon-Thurs)Quiz (Friday)
7.30 Coro St (Mon/Wed/Fri) Regional (Tues/Thurs)
8.00 Tonight (Mon/Fri) The Bill (Tues/Thurs) Doco Soap(Wed)
8.30 Coro St (Mon) Airline (Friday)
9.00 Drama (Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri) Film until 10.30pm on Wed
10.00 Regional Progs (Monday/Tues/Thurs/Fri)
10.30 ITV News
10.50 HTV News
11.00 Football Highlights/Talk Show/Late night drama series etc (Mon-Thurs)
Regional on Friday for 1hr!
12.00 ITV Nightime

This schedule gives plenty of regional slots which is what everyone wants - for ITV to be more regional.

I like most of you welcome this move, now face it how many times has the bulletin been transmitted at 10.00pm and with Sir Trev himself, well it isn't that many, but 10.30 seems more reasonable, it's just a shame they didn't keep with the Nightly News at 11.00pm, as that was a good idea, but again it was a little too late for some. Though a problem arises when there is a 2 hour drama, film or even a football match which makes the schedule go worse again, IMO they're better off putting a 10 minute bulletin on at 9.00pm, then have a 20 minute bulletin at 10.30pm or after the 'Big Event'. Though the News At Ten we have now is nothing compared to the old one and with this new bulletin it does need a serious revamp and not the current ITV News look, as it won't fit in at all. But it doesn't suprise me and I assume that it has been going out at 10.30pm more recently than it has been at 10.00pm?

I don't like the idea of splitting the bulletin and having 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there. That for me is a far worst solution than what we have currently.

Ideally the best solution would be to put it out at 9pm slap bang in the middle of the evening. But that wouldn't work for ITV as that is the key battle ground for viewers, they would probably lose out big time.

But with 9pm you could have your Emmerdale, Corrie, The Bill etc. before the bulletin, half hour for news, and then from 9.30pm the rest of the night is free for long dramas, uninterrupted films, whatever (obviously this wouldn't work when there is football on). Oh I don't know, it's a complete headache for the schedulers.

I think this is a great idea. During the recent Iraq war, ITV1 broadcast news updates at 9pm, and attracted large numbers of viewers.

Well yes, and when the BBC moved to 10pm (whilst the ITC were reviewing the ITV situation), ITV actually welcomed the move. At that time, ITV had bulletins at 6.30pm & 11pm, and were actually happy with that. ITV must have seen it as an opportunity for the ITC to get off their back, as a news requirement was being fulfilled at 10pm, but oh no.

It was the ITC that interferred and created the "News at When" scenario, forcing ITV to move their news back to 10pm when the BBC had already moved their bulletin to that time. The whole conflict and ridiculous compromise thing was a creation of the ITC.

ITV is so much more heavily regulated than the BBC will ever be, why should the ITC have the power to dictate the schedule ? ITV have to go through months of consultation and the approval of the ITC to alter the schedule. But seemingly the BBC can move their bulletin around with a whim.

Doesn't seem right.
