Just been watching the World Open snooker on both BBC and Eurosport, and it appears that it is filmed in HD, as shown on Eurosport. However, it isn't in HD on the BBC, which is even more strange considering it has to be a better alternative to the BBC HD preview. Why are the BBC filming in HD and not utilising it? Are they, like Match of the Day, waiting for a move to Salford next year?

Caught a bit of the 'Native HD' and it looks pretty impressive on Eurosport HD.

I guess at the moment this tournament isn't getting much exposure, I was watching a game on Eurosport last night yet it wasn't shown on the BBC live, I guess if they aren't going to show it live on BBC Two in the evening, then I doubt they're going to the effort of putting it on BBC HD.

Still daft as you say, but they seem to only expand BBC HD's daytime hours for big Sporting events, and I noticed the Pope's visit on Sunday was shown in the morning, with a 2 hour gap between programmes at lunchtime.

I guess when BBC One HD launches soon, then BBC HD will probably have more room to show events like this.

As you say considering they don't interrupt the BBC2 schedule too much in primetime now I don't think there is any justification for it being shown in HD. The disruption such a long form sport would cause to the schedule for something that surely can't be that much better in HD due to the often static shot just can't really be justified, and I think even when BBC HD has it's second channel I suspect at most only BBC2 coverage would be simulcast.

I think the Snooker is an independent production rather than an in-house one.

If the contract is a long-term one, then it is likely that it will have been agreed at an SD budget, and the indie will have negotiated SD facilities deals with their providers.

In fact - how many of BBC Sports indie commissions are in HD?

Whilst new commissions for 2011/2012 financial year (for the wider BBC - not sure about sport which, like News, may well have a different commissioning structure being less channel-based, and less programme-by-programme funded) are now expected by default to deliver in HD (and I think budgets will no longer uplift to fund HD on a show-by-show basis) - previous contracts that span multiple years are unlikely to be rewritten mid-contract?

Likewise the World Championship from The Crucible was in HD on Eurosport and not on BBC HD. Neither are BBC productions, World Snooker/IMG produce the snooker for the BBC and hold the world distribution rights.

Suspect that means that the BBC presentation operation is only contracted to provide SD - and thus the on-site production for the BBC is in SD.

I think until BBC One HD starts there is a bit of a scheduling log jam for HD content on BBC channels anyway - more and more shows are appearing in HD.
