In that Independent article Lucy Jones says that SM:TV "quickly" became successful.

Also, "if it's 1998, chances are you're still loyal to Live and Kicking... but Jamie Theakston and Zoe Ball are leaving". Theako didn't announce his departure until March 1999, two months after Zoe.

I'm sure that if there was free reign and SMTV was in the evening then the jokes and the humour would not be as humorous. Drawing boobs or implying sexual acts wouldn't quite have the same impact at that time.

Just look at OTT. And Slap Bang as well, Ant & Dec's first primetime vehicle. Both bombed pretty much by replicating elements of their Saturday morning counterparts in the evening.

Well, indeed - and Slap Bang is the perfect example. They did the Chums-style sitcom Beers, but it didn't work at all, because the whole fun of Chums came from the crap jokes and the tiny set and the innuendo and the fact they were clearly just messing about. When you just transfer that lock, stock and barrel to primetime - and you now have a studio audience laughing at it - you're not doing a parody of a crap sitcom. You're doing a crap sitcom.
