God, anything but a thistle. "How many cliches can you fit onto an ident?" Well, just take a look at past STV idents... Lion, tartan, thistles... spare us! If ITV1 had an ident revolving around the cross of St George everybody would think it was ludicrous.
Only because the Cross of St George is associated mainly with football and the BNP.

Don't talk such rubbish.
It is the flag of England - and too many people in this country are ashamed to fly it. It's about time it stopped and we embraced our flag.

The Scots,Irish and Welsh are very proud of their culture and in England i'm not saying that your not proud of your culture, however you don't seem to embrace it the way we do.
I think it's just because we are much smaller .We have diffrent laws and and a diffrent education system and it's very diffrent in culture not to mention the **** weather .As for the Welsh it's a pity that they are stuck with ITV 1 Wales. HTV was far better branding. The nations are a very diffrent story from England and i don't think that you can even begin to compare them.
People are ashamed to fly the flag for fear of being arrested for 'causing offence' to ethnic groups. It bloody well annoys me!
My point has nothing to do about what you said, but it's something I feel strongly about, sorry!
Well i can only say that i don't think it's like that in Scotland people would carry a saltire flag i have seen this sort of thing at boring events (don't laugh) such as the Highland games and **** like that etc.
Way off topic there is a big thing up here in Glasgow with Celtic and Rangers and i don't approve of that in anyway.

Its becoming more widespread as ranghers fans throughout scotland wave brittish flags and celtic supporter wave irish ones...nor do i.
A Saltire fluttering in the wind with the station name beneath it - well why not? Good idea say I.
What a great idea....look at the USA.....lots of stations fly the flag (check out FOX news on sky here to see) and I think a good new ident incorporating the saltire could look fantastic. There ars some great mocks on the mock pages - have a look!!

Another advantage of that idea of course is that you don't have to pay Buzzy Bee Media or whatever they're called a couple of million to come up with the design.

I know the network is a group of 3 companies who own the 15 franchises. ITV plc is one of those companies. (SMG and UTV being the other two)
Surely 4 companies... Channel is still there, isn't it. (though it's probably a straight repro of ITV1 these days).

The ITV Brand extends to the NETWORK, but SMG and UTV choose to use their own brands, by covering up ITV. I think this is a stupid decision, as if ITV as a brand was extended to Scotland and Northern Ireland, it would strengthen the brand as a whole, and would also allow them to take advantage of the ITV brand outside of their franchise's region.

I see no commercial benefit to keeping the brands in place over the ITV brand which has a much larger area to work with, and is becoming a strong european/global name.
Why should strengthening the ITV brand be of concern to UTV? Their own brand, UTV, is of much more interest to them. Dispite poor quality idents, sloppy presentation direction, and dull/dwindling local programming it is a very strong brand in Northern Ireland, and across the border, made stronger by its use on the u.tv website, UTV Internet, UTV Talk, and the UTV Radio Group (which includes U105 in Belfast).

It also means UTV and SMG have to discuise the fact it is ITV 1 they are showing, which costs money, makes duplication, results in mistakes, and provides a less consistant service to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
If you look at UTV's output you can clearly see that they spend very little disguising ITV1 branding. The finacial benefits of keeping the UTV brand on-air (i.e. it promotes UTV's other ventures) far out ways the savings that would be made by getting rid of the brand on television.
Yes, there are mistakes, and it is a less consistent service. This is
partly
due to the fact that UTV have had their clean feed of network programmes replaced by a not so clean feed of network ITV1, and partly due to the fact UTV management don't really care about providing a consistent or polished service.

But why are UTV getting a non clean feed now, can't they just ask the guys to give them a clean feed, or does it cost?
