I mean that I just don't see the point in SMG owning the stations

to make money for their shareholders?

I realise that, but I meant what's the point in SMG owning Scottish and Grampian from a viewer's point of view?
what is the point of itv plc holding licences from a viewer's point of view? the itv companies are there to make money for their shareholders, simple.

when itv plc take over smg, rename the stations to itv scotland and move stv into a unit on a glasgow industrial park, with grampian news becoming a 7 minute opt within scotland today ... THEN will you be happy?

Grampian News is practically Scotland Today at times. A lot of reports are on both stations anyway.

I doubt ITV would join them together, but I do think the only difference between them would be the news (which it is now practically).

why do you doubt that? ofcom are relaxing rules left, right and centre, itv plc couldn't wait to merge htv west and westcountry, move central east to birmingham and meridian north was moved to the new meridian building.

so you would like to see scotland's main commercial tv stations relegated to a news opt-out within an english schedule, with the closure and sell off of all facilities, studios and network programme production depts?

JUST so you can see the itv plc idents?

As i've said earlier in this thread, I'm happy to keep Scottish and Grampian owned by SMG as long as they improve their presentation. I'm not bothered about seeing ITV PLC idents as i'm getting Sky shortly, but if Scottish/Grampian got rid of the celebrities I would be happy.

The fact is that the Grampian and STV viewers would NEVER call the stations ITV or ITV 1 Scotland.SMG do need to market the Scottish and Grampian brands much better than they are currently doing .
A poor example this moring on STV was the male announcer introducing Scotsport and again we are back to "THIS CHANNEL"i would rather they just left it than say "this Channel" it is just so bad.

You've really got it in for Colin. Laughing
I agree with you, and the station names should also be on the promos, instead of four blue boxes.

I think the Scottish Parliament would have something to say if ITV was to take over and re-name the regions. If they planned on merging the two to the same city then I think the Executive would have something to say about the loss of jobs in Aberdeen and other regions.

Not sure if either could do anything - but I don't think the people of Scotland would be too impressed to see Grampian/Scottish TV suddenly vanish into just ITV 1

The Scottish Parliament doesn't have any power over media regulation, so they could whine about it, but they wouldn't be able to do anything. And sadly, I suspect most viewers wouldn't care.

Bit of a clumsy link there - we came out the weather to a short burst of an ITV1 menu, before the next/later came up. After a long delay the voiceover kicked in, and kept going after it disappeared, through the breakbumper and about 7 seconds into the advert. Sounds automated - a live announcer would surely have either held the menu up for a few seconds longer or stopped talking.

And in the ad break the introduction of SMG's new way to get us all to advertise. An amateurish, 3 seconder with the slogan 'telly has the power' (hngh). www.tellyhasthepower.com is the website, interesting the voiceover asked people to advertise on 'Scottish Television', as opposed to the official brand of Scottish TV.

THAT offering will surely deter potential advertisers from employing Scottish, as their commercial maker. It is cheap, nasty and so tacky. It makes their previous advert look professional. Laughing

The microregions on sale span both Scottish and Grampian. I suppose it is accurately described as "Advertising on Scottish television" (small "T")..

Count yourself lucky that STV is called "this channel", here in my neck of the woods Anglia and Central are called "ITV1"
