Huge first for Sky1, they're simulcasting the 'Lost' finale at 5am on Monday with ABC on the West Coast.

They must have their own copy in the UK, surely? With that in mind, won't they show it with a UK style adverts rather than US style with adverts straight after the opening? Could Sky even be ahead of the US at certain points of the programme?
It will be interesting to see if they have had time to do the subtitles and audio description by the time it airs too.
Good work - though they'll probably get complaints about the ads!

Sky always take their first break in the same place as the US do (after the Lost title and before the credits). They then use the third and fifth US break points.

Yep - they'll need a UK copy if the show is to be watchable...
The US transmission will be 720/60p (which is what ABC use) from a 1080/24p source, which would need some pretty nasty standards conversion to show it at 1080/50i in the UK - which would massively drop Lost's excellent HD picture quality in the UK. (Conversion of 1080/24p via 720/60p to 1080/50i in real-time will have all sorts of nastiness to contend with - particularly motion artefacts. This is MUCH worse than just converting 1080/60i to 1080/50i)
They'll almost certainly have been given a 1080/24p->1080/25p speed-up (possibly delivered as 1080/50i) master for TX as usual.
We're lucky in the UK - we get Lost in significantly higher quality than US viewers! (The show is made 1080/24p - but broadcast in 720/60p in the US - so they only get 1280x720 rather than the full 1920x1080 resolution of the master which Sky broadcast)

I don't watch Lost so forgive me if this is wrong, but the impression I got from the Guardian article was that Lost is shown later in the week from the US airing. If this was really about trying to beat pirates surely airing the episode in prime time the following evening (as in 9pm Monday night) would suffice. It smacks of pure gimmick.

It is a bit of a gimmick, but at the same time it's a finale where fans will have to avoid the internet for an entire day to avoid spoling 6 years of buildup to this episode. I'm off to see whether its appeared on the virgin EPG yet, it wasn't there last night. I'll record it and get up at 6 so I can avoid all adverts by speeding through them

So those that want to watch it at a reasonable hour will now have to avoid the internet and people at work who may have already watched it. Great.

Even with Sky's viewing figures those downloading would account for a very small proportion of those watching, and most sane people would be more than willing to wait until the evening.
I suspect too with a show like Lost which is fast tracked anyway the bulk of those downloading are the ones who can't watch it anyway after Sky poached it from free to air TV.
