The tweaked logo is used at the end of the new Premier League ad.

Kind of unrelated, but I've just noticed that Virgin Media's advert promoting their fibre optic cable has been edited on Sky1, so that it's only bashing BT's service rather than "BT and Sky". Smart move, I guess.

Virgin and Sky seem to have developed warmer relations recently, with trailers for Sky channels often beginning with "For Virgin Media customers". A far cry from the days of "Sky Snooze, try BBC"!

The 2010 version looks so much better than the new one.

The new logo looks to have much more depth with a glass bevel effect at the edges which is an improvement over the previous logos and will work well on and off screen. The Sky logos launched in 2010/2011 were poorly designed. It looked good on print but not on-screen, which often led to separate 3d, glossier versions being created for on screen trailers and idents and these often looked very different and suffered from bad alignment and shading.

A rough mock of what the Sports part should look like with the unmodified font, to match most of the other channel logos. They are streching the letters horizontally but I think it would look better left untouched. Same for Sky Movies.

I am not sure if it is just down to keeping the logo familiar, or if they actually feel that the wider letter shapes fit better with the target demographic. But the font is flexible enough to support narrow, and wide variants. Just looking at the word "Sports" in the standard version of the typeface, makes it feel softer, and the "O" stands out a bit too much.

I agree completely. I'm not sure about in the UK but here in the US glossy/shiny logos/graphics are kind of over and they have been replaced with what I would describe a matte design. By matte I mean how the graphics would look if you printed them out on a piece of card stock as opposed to regular photo paper.
If you've seen the ESPN graphics you know what I'm talking about. NBC followed suit this past season (really since the NFL playoffs) with a little bit more color than ESPN. Fox seemed to have ripped off the ESPN color scheme when they got the World Cup.
