It definitely was (is) a continuation of the last logo before Sky bought the channel.

What's Sky Movies' excuse? It's previous logo didn't have that /|/| M.

The logotype is from the same era as the Sky Arts one - http://theident.gallery/skymovies-2009.php; and also the Sky1/2/3 of the time (although they didn't quite follow the y's axis).

I'd forgotten the 'pre-boxed era' as the logic behind the slanted 'M' logo for Movies.

In fairness, with no vertical divider between the "sky" part and the "MOVIES" part, I think the effect still works.

Despite having legally changed the name of the UK operating company last November from BSkyB to Sky UK, this is the first time I've seen it used on screen with one of their movie ratings.

They've also given the ratings symbol a nice little makeover. Thumbs up

Does this mean DVB Cornwall will be using SUK rather than BSB?

I think you mean 'BSkyB': however, it was only the business media that referred to it as such.

Of course, now the parent company is 'Sky plc', and registered on the FTSE as such. I don't think anyone will shed a tear about the demise of the BSB element after 23+ years.

Never understood the reasoning behind Sky having their own ratings. Why not just use the BBFC ones?

BBFC ratings are legally binding wherever they apply, Sky ones presumably are not.

It's hangover from the analogue days, when Sky used to rate films as being suitable for transmission after a certain time of day, an 8 rating was for transmission after 8pm (equivalent to BBFC 15), a 10 (for 10pm) was equivalent to BBFC 18 and 11 (11pm) was equivlant to R18. Also because of encryption, their watershed started at 8pm as opposed to 9pm, and so they couldn't show anything other than U or PG before 8pm.

Since then with the advent of Sky Digital, and the ability to air films rated 15/18 at all hours of the day (plus the on demand of course) hidden behind the Sky+ PIN system, the system became pointless and it was easier to use the BBFC ratings.

There's a video on TV Ark from the time explaining it.
