I suspect it's not feasible for most programme opt outs which are live programmes. AdSmart caches them to the Sky+ hardrive and plays them out from there

Ah that's a shame, I thought they were being played out live on a different feed rather than from the box itself.

But if you've got a whole broadcast feed just for the adverts on each of these variations, you may as well broadcast the whole channel on that feed and not bother with the fancy stream switching. Playing from the Sky box itself means you only need the one broadcast stream.

Yes, and many more permutations are available. If it was done through a linear means they might only have 2 or 3 variations.

I've just been reading up about it, it's really quite clever: http://www.v-net.tv/bskyb%E2%80%99s-linear-ad-targeting-world-first-demo-and-full-launch-details

I'm sure I've seen AdSmart used on NOWTV as well. Was watching Sky 1 a couple of weeks back during The Flash and there were different ads being played on the smart tv and on my Android phone.

Two. One for the standard feed, one for the box to record the targeted ads, ja?

I imagine the targeted ads are done the same way as Sky+ automatically recording a selection of featured programmes overnight to a reserved party of the hard drive.

No, because the ads could come from a data stream, or direct off the internet. They don't need to be played out in real time on a broadcast stream that otherwise sits there sending a blank signal out. Even if you did use a broadcast stream, you could use bandwidth freed up overnight by channels closing down. Either way, you still only end up with one broadcast stream of the channels using AdSmart.

I've heard that they're working on AdSmart for on-demand programmes too, which means you'll get a proper break rather than just a clean channel ident.

(I also heard the word 'non-skippable' being uttered. Let's hope not...)

That has been a capability since Sky+ launched I believe (as it was/is with Tivo). However the inevitable consumer backlash has to be weighed up as part of this decision...

It looks like the 'Anytime' programmes get sent to boxes on 5 slots (2 SD, 3 HD - a couple of the HD ones are part time) on Sky's satellite transponders, presumably sent in real time.

I would have though they'd use the same method for AdSmart, I would have thought that they only need to send out new ads every day.

Two new Sky Living idents. I haven't seen either used on TV. I wonder if an upcoming Europe wide re-brand of the Sky channels could be the reason why no new idents have been appearing recently.

Although rather annoying for those who have not caught up yet with the latest episodes of Grey's Anatomy as they appear to contain plot information that some viewers may wished to have avoided!!

That explains why they have not aired yet. I don't watch the show and didn't know it contained spoilers, sorry about that!

Not your fault really. I do think however it's a bit careless of Sky to make show tailored idents when there is a good chance some viewers (like me) are catching up on shows through their heavily promoted 'box sets' and haven't seen all the episodes to know up to date plot information. It's careless if anything and why I think show tailored idents are lazy and a horrible idea.
