I think that's an odd thing to say; Sky's branding in particular was a load of crap until the late 90s.

Things have been a bit stale recently (notably there has been pretty much nothing from the BBC in absolutely ages), but I think the ITV rebrands were all pretty good this year. Sky's have taken a rather dull turn but I'm sure they'll do something interesting before too long.

Oh definitely not. The branding of most of the Sky channels up until 1998, was significantly different to most of the other channels out there. 1998's Sky News was a massive improvement, but Sky One's idents were far less impressive. Sky Premier was good ident wise, Moviemax was just awful. Sky Sports was very good, and they haven't really changed the Sky Sports look that significantly since, It's just evolved a bit. Current Sky News is okay, but most of the others, are pretty much instantly forgetable.

In fact yoou take a look at most idents today, they are not memorable, there is little to distinguish them from each other, and little to attach a memory to. That's one reason why idents of today have little appeal.

I guess it's down to personal opinion then, my opinion of the pre-1998 stuff is that was all tacky, especially compared to the nice stuff BSB used (none of which lasted beyond about 1991).

I disagree. The pre 1998 Sky idents were fab. The only one which sticks in the memory from the next 5 years was the amazing Sky Premier ident with the suicidal ladies. Wink

Back in 2010/2011 Sky launched common boxed logos for all its channels in an effort to have brand consistency. Two years later the consistency seems to have been lost with multiple different logos on idents. All of the Entertainment channels have a transparent glass effect behind the 'Sky' and 'HD' parts of the logo, a nice refraction effect distorted or enlarged the image behind the logo when launched. Since then many idents lack this effect and the logo looks very flat.

An example of the multiple logos can be seen from Sky Arts.

http://ehnetwork.yolasite.com/resources/sky%20arts%20logos.JPG

The first logo is the original logo used on the 2011 idents, it is currently used on all Skys trailer endboards. It is also used on about half of Sky1's idents, the Sky Living channels idents.
The second logo introduced was introduced in 2012 on the sky arts stings competition idents. Some Sky1 and all of the Sky Atlantic idents used this type design. It was also used on the 'Sky Loving' weekend idents. The third logo is only seen on Sky Arts idents from 2012. To top it off the brutal Sky Arts Rieu logo.
Would Sky not be better selecting just 1 style logo - preferably the second logo, they should always make sure the glass part of the logos have a refraction effect behind.

I went to Glasgow and when going down the escalator and there was a Sky Store (not the one you have on your boxes :-S) and i saw a Sky Sports logo. instead of Blue/Red it was Red/Blue! Could this mean Sky Sports anniversary is coming up?

That's a bit of a vague post, where did you see this logo on screens, on someones shirt?

Surely the best way to find out when the anniversary is coming up would be to look up when it's launch. Also they wouldn't just show an old logo without any context and they'd probably show the original ones not ones that are slightly different to what are around now.

Out of interest, is this a temporary channel or a permanent one? We don't have these sorts of things very often in Australia.
There seems to be a new Sky channel every day...

I always thought it was better when there was only one lady left...

Incidently, there was an interesting quiz item about Sky on the Guardian's Media podcast this week concerning the identity crisis between Sky's channels... which channel shows what

Nah, it's a seasonal one that'll be replaced in the next couple of months, possibly by Sky Movies Christmas if nothing else.

Last year the same slot was used by 'Sky Movies Summer', 'Sky Movies 007' and 'Sky Movies Christmas' - with 'Sky Movies Showcase' at other times.

But Superheroes ISN'T Showcase. It's Sky Movies Greats. And yes, it is temporary - it runs until September 1st.
