And surprise surprise, it's just a scene from a programme or the stars standing around with a Sky 1 logo on it, like all the others. What's the theme of these idents? They're all completely different.

'Programme-specific'. Uninspiring but they do the bare minimum identity flagging job. Must be cheap to churn out too. The last 'proper' set (the ones with the big mirrored 1) really wasn't that great either, these arguably do a better job if only in terms of accurate channel promotion/portrayal rather than any semblance of creative flare.

Both sets are massively outshone by the Sky|One, Sky Onc and Sky1 packages from the 2000s.

Also, I believe the strategy for Sky1 around the time of the 2011 rebrand was to reposition it away from 'that big (but still only on satellite) cult imported repeats channel' towards being an unquestionable direct rival to the terrestrials, BBC One specifically, reflected by the quantity of original commissions across multiple genres. The result was a confused, instantly forgettable identity which paled in comparison to the work done with Atlantic and Living (although the latter has recently severely cheapened its set too for reasons I dont quite understand).

Challenge and PickTV are quite nice. Sky News is alright too.

Following lobbying from Equity and a viewer survey, Sky have changed their end credit squeeze. Where before the credits were shrunk into a very small box while a full-screen clip played, now the design is a bit more similar to Channel 4's.

Has it become similar to the recent Harry Potter design, and more like Channel 5's, where both are shrunk to the same size and placed next to each other?

Not as much like Channel 4's as I'd heard. They look good, a lot better than what went before.

Found an article with a bit more detail on how it came about: http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/2012/11/performers-victory-as-sky-expands-its-programme-credits/

I could understand their complaint about the way in which sky used to do it, or even T4, but all the other channels provide visible credits, and are either not shrunk that much, or do the ITV Slide approach. The report seems to suggest they have a problem with everything.

A shame that Sky News SD isn't launching on the Freesat EPG too, but I can understand why that may not be the commercial thing to do, otherwise a great decision.
