BBC have already said that MotD will be at 10:30pm every Saturday night with a Sunday Morning repeat.

Why mess with tradition! Excellent news. It allows ITV to plow more money into other programming and the BBC get to do what IMO, it does best. Didn't a load of the MOTD technical team move over to ITV though? Wonder if they'll get a returning phone call?

And poor Des, that must surely be it now.

I think the crew should be left alone - if they're not loyal to the BBC then why on Earth should they be allowed back? Good riddance to them, I say!!

I wonder if the BBC will try and do something revolutionary and screen them at 7pm to boost their evening schedule!!!, although now with live 5.15pm games, I imagine they won't be able to screen them till 7.30pm at the earliest.

Why not put them on at 8 or 9pm on BBC1? That sort of slot didnt get good ratings on ITV1 but why should BBC care about ratings?

Can we alter this thread title to "Football Rights" or something so it reflects everything and not just Sky?

Fantastic news that MOTD is returning, the Premiership could never cut it, especially at the silly time of 7pm. I await its return very much.

Well except the Champions League which gets him on prime time tv every week, and not to mention fronting ITV's coverage of Euro 2004

Good, let's hope that ITV can put the money saved from the loss of the highlights contract into some decent Saturday night entertainment. As Premiership highlights are not really big ratings winners anyway, as they found out.
Or pay the Nationwide League some of the money they are still owe for the last football contract the big ITV two won.

If I was with the Premier League - I would certainly take into account the ITV Digital (Granada and Carlton) deal with the Nationwide League.

Well, Des joined ITV for live football before they got the Premiership rights (although it could be suggested he may have known that ITV had a good chance to snatch them), so will now just be left with the Champions League.

Re: timings. Hopefully the Sunday morning repeat won't be on at around 7.30am -I think ITV have it right at 9.25am.

To be honest i think that because the highlights were on ITV, many people didn't bother tuning in. ITV1's schedules are ALWAYS late and are interupted by adverts every 10-15 minutes.
I'm glad the BBC has them back - they can show ITV what a proper broadcaster does.

Seconded - As soon as I've got into a programme, the first ad break comes on and disrupts the flow of my concentration which is why I try and avoid shows with too many advert breaks. I'm glad Gary and co are back to do those with longer concentration spans a favour..... hope other sporting coverage will follow suit....

Yes, you're spot on - I yearn for uninterrupted coverage of Extreme Ironing!! They always cut to adverts when they're starting on the collar of the shirts and I watch in hopefulness I'll pick up hints as to how to iron them better! Wink

Whilst I see your point. The FA aren't owed anything by Carlton and Granada, they were owed money by a subsidiary, but that is how business works.

Generally it is fairly good news. The BBC get back the highlights and Sky get more than ever. The league get a decent income [still far too inflated], and the EU are fairly happy.

A good point was made earlier, Sky may find it difficult to show 138 games! I see no reason [and strangely enough I havn't read the contracts] why Sky counldn't rent out certain games to other channels. It'll depend mostly upon how they market the deal.

It's good news about todays announcement. It's going back to how it was, as Sky Sports treats the Premiership rather well and it's great to hear that MOTD will be making an appearance on Saturday night, it's great to see such a good thing returning to Auntie Beeb.

Though the FA announced that Packages No 1 and 2 are for Sky Sports only, but for the other 2 Sky can do what they like with them, it'll be likely that Packages 3 and 4 will be PPV. But it's nice to see it "Back at Home." The BBC and Sky are excellent at treating and producing such good football back on TV. Shame that a terrestrial channel didn't get any live rights.

I can't see that happening. Sky wouldn't let anything good go, so if a game was to be resold it would end up being the 19th team playing the 20th team which other broadcasters wouldn't particularly want.

Something that is never mentioned, its a pitty regional premiership highlights can't be dished out as well, on ITV1's Soccer Sunday they always have to skirt around the issue whenever the region's premiership club(s) are mentioned
