Good, let's hope that ITV can put the money saved from the loss of the highlights contract into some decent Saturday night entertainment. As Premiership highlights are not really big ratings winners anyway, as they found out.

To be honest i think that because the highlights were on ITV, many people didn't bother tuning in. ITV1's schedules are ALWAYS late and are interupted by adverts every 10-15 minutes.
I'm glad the BBC has them back - they can show ITV what a proper broadcaster does.

So Match of the Day returns to Saturday nights then...

Only without Des, I presume!

The fact that Sky got all 4 live packages is a bit boring, earlier they were saying that even Channel 4 and 5 could have got a look in, when in reality not even BBC or ITV managed to get them

But the ratings for the later 10.30pm slot were similar to those of the BBC before. There is a substantial amount of audience not interested in football, so let's hope for some decent programming against Match of the Day.

I'd like to suggest to Mr Salmon (Head of Sport, BBC), that he puts the Sunday highlights package (which he describes as optional - surely a waste if not shown) is shown on BBC Three!? Seems like the ideal place to put it without destroying the weekend schedules on both nights!

Director of BBC Sport Peter Salmon said that the BBC didn't bid for any of the live packages, as they already have the FA Cup/England Home Games live matches package.

I suspect ITV did bid for the live rights - they might have been worried about losing out on the Premiership altogether. Or maybe they are satisfied with sharing the Champions League. Either way, I should think they feel a bit empty-handed, and Des is probably on his way off to retirement!

It makes you wonder, the Premier League said that they were happy to hand the highlights to either BBC or ITV, but when it came down to it, it was who bid the most, and BBC marginally outbid ITV. Which leaves you to wonder if ITV did bid for some live packages, and so downgraded their bid for highlights a bit, incase they ended up with both. But, now they've left empty handed.
