Calling it channel 6 would of been great years ago, but not after switchoff. Look at ITV 1, and thats normally on channel 3!!!

Sky One, Sky Two, and Sky Three make sense in a way, and I'm sure Sky Four will follow, so ITV BBC and Sky will have 4 channels each.

I do think these sky channels could do with some tweaking, I mean it wouldnt be too difficult as they could make programmes using their own services.

Why have Sky Three male skewed though when it's launching to provide a showcase on Freeview. It wouldn't make much sense replacing one themed channel (Sky Travel) with another.

Where's the logic in having Sky News simulcast on Sky 1 three times day Rolling Eyes Honestly..it's one the most stupid ideas that's ever been battered around this place - and there have been many!

Why can't people get it through their thick heads that Sky1 is an entertainment channel? There are enough rolling news channels, yet people persist on clogging up entertainment channels with news in their dire fantasy schedules.

Agree about Sky One, but I think having a flagship bulletin on simulcast on Sky Three would be a good idea, such as Sunrise in the morning and an evening news bulletin.

There are people who probably wouldn't watch a news channel in the morning, but would watch a breakfast news programme on a "general" channel.

I disagree.

I really do not see the point of 'simulcasting' a programme on two channels that are both readily available on Sky, Cable and Freeview. If Sky One or Three wants a breakfast show, it should come up with it's own. It's just lazy otherwise - Breakfast, for example.

Are you saying there are people who wouldn't watch 'Sunrise' on Sky News - but would watch it if it was simulcast on Sky3? It beggars belief that someone could be that thick..it really does. Rolling Eyes

People who avoid watching news have their reasons for doing so. Chasing after them by simulcasting Sky news on SKY1,2 and/or 3 is not going to work - people are just going to turn to E4. BBC3 News is a prime example of a show trying reach out to those who wouldn't normally watch a news show - it's incredibly dumbed down and still has an audience that is little more then 0.

Sky News simulcasting on a channel that is available to everyone who has Sky News anyway would just be ludicrous.

Fair point - especially about BBC3 News (which has gone downhill since they introduced the sofas!).

What I'm trying to say I guess is there are people who will watch a news bulletin packaged as a breakfast show or traditional bulletin who wouldn't neccessarily tune in to a rolling news channel - and IF Sky were taking the route of making Sky Three a "showcase" channel, they should definately be showcasing Sky News.

Re: Channel 6. If another traditional "terrestrial" channel launched, you would expect it to come from Sky - and if they could secure the slot on all platforms, Sky Six would be the sensible name! However, if it did become the official Channel Six, there would be restrictions on the channel with requirements for news, original programming etc.

Broadcasting on all digital platforms I think Sky Three will have as wide a reach as C5 had when it launched - and after analogue switch off as a free to air broadcaster it could potentially challenge the BBC and ITV for rights currently restricted to free-to-air TV such as the World Cup and Olympics.

Perhaps even Sky may concede and make The Ashes available free to air on Sky Three in 2009! Doubt it though - but having a free to air channel could give Sky a negotiating tool when rights come up for renewal!

For the moment, Sky have said they have no plans to launch Sky Three on Digital Cable.

Therefore in the event of the analogue switch off they're still not quite in the position to be a true free to air and free to all channel to bid for protected sports rights.

Admittedly putting Sky Three on NTL/Telewest will undoubtedly eventually happen- any non-Sky One subscribers on these platforms are going to be mighty pee-ed off at not getting 24 season 3 etc.

If I was Sky I wouldn't call it Sky One/Two or Three - call it Channel Six. Plant the idea in people's minds that this is, in effect, the sixth terrestrial channel. Show a Sky News bulletin - a good mix of programming, films, sport etc. Make it a really good channel - watch the ad revenuse rise.

Well there's not much point with terrestrial being switched off in a few years, is there?

Plus how would they re-name three seperate channels to Channel 6? Channel 6 Extra? Channel 6 3?

Also Sky already have the areas you mention you'd like to see on the channel with their other channels - if you want news, watch Sky News, if you want films, watch Sky Movies or Box Office, if you want sports, watch Sky Sports. Sky One, Two and Three are Entertainment channels.

Not much point for you brave pioneers in the world of multi-channel tv - but you have to remember the vast masses out there who don't know what digital tv is - and still don't know it's coming. Even now, fifteen years in to the age of multi-channel tv, most people watch BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. And they'll carry on watching those five channels, more than all the others.

With some canny branding and advertising Sky could convince people 'Channel Six' is a sixth 'analogue' channel - even if it's only yet another option in a multi-channel world.

Only a suggestion.

But if they have no idea what digital is, they wouldn't be able to recieve this 'channel 6' so convincing them it is another analogue channel is pointless.
BP

But digital is coming, if they like it or not, and I bet when you force the 40 million or so people who don't have it, to get it they'll still watch the original five channels, because that's what they're comfortable with. Even in multi-channel homes, the five 'analogue' channels get the most viewers. The 'Six' as I'm beginning to call it - could capitalise on that residual reluctance to experiment.
MD

Perhaps, but that can still work for my listings ideas. People know the name Sky One, and if they see updates from sky news and they hear "for more on all these stories tune to channel 501 or visit Sky News Active by pressing red" wont that raise awareness for Sky News?
