Sky Three to launch on Freeview

Thursday September 22, 2005

BSkyB is to launch a new entertainment channel, Sky Three, and in a challenge to terrestrial broadcasters, will put it on Freeview.

The new channel, part of a revamp of Sky's entertainment offerings that will see Sky One's sister station Sky Mix rebranded as Sky Two, will feature the first free-to-air offering of the third run of hit US drama 24.

The service, which launches next month, will be the first Sky entertainment channel on Freeview, where it will replace Sky Travel. All three channels will be available on digital satellite.

Sky Three marks a significant ramping up of Sky's entertainment offering as the satellite broadcaster seeks to make up ground lost to BBC3 and in particular ITV2 and ITV3. It will face further competition later this year when ITV launches lads' channel ITV4.

Sky One has suffered because it is not available on Freeview, the fastest growing digital platform. By putting Sky Three on the digital terrestrial service, Sky bosses will hope to recover some of its audience share, and also provide a showcase for its digital satellite channels.

"The expansion of Sky's portfolio of entertainment channels will allow us to deliver more value to customers and to exploit programme rights more effectively," said Dawn Airey, the managing director of Sky Networks.

"By launching simultaneously on Freeview, Sky Three will reach an even wider audience and offer digital terrestrial viewers the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of popular programmes from Sky."

Sky Three will offer a mixed schedule including programmes already shown on Sky One and original lifestyle commissions and travel documentaries from Sky Travel. It will be available to 13m homes, 5.2m of them via Freeview.

The third run of Kiefer Sutherland drama 24, which has already aired on Sky One, will be one of the highlights of Sky Three's launch schedule. Other programmes transferring from Sky One will include crime drama Cold Case and I Can Change Your Life, featuring hypnotist Paul McKenna.

Sky Mix launched two years ago offering another opportunity to see recent episodes of shows already broadcast on Sky One and has proved successful in boosting the main channel's audience.

Sky Travel launched in 2002.

Oh well, no big loss of losing Sky Travel.

As long as they still put the Miss World contestants show on the new channel, as they did on Sky Travel last year, it'll be fine by me.

I think it was the only thing I ever watched on Sky Travel.

I got it from BBC Ceefax 500...they'll be having orgasms over on Digital Spy at this.

Still, at least it shows BskyB has SOME interest in developing a meaningful precense on DTT.

A bit unexpected, though I think the intention always was to replace Sky Travel with a general channel.

Thought they might have used the Sky Mix brand though - seems more approrpriate.

The most interesting thing is it'll carry season three of 24. Could this see an end of programmes being shown on Sky One then on terrestrial channels, with Sky keeping the Free to air rights for Sky Three.

In the last couple of years C4 have changed their policy slightly and for almost all it's drama series, they have the first-run rights for E4 and the free-to-air rights for C4.

Hopefully Sky will use Sky Three as a real showcase, rather than filling with cheap imports. As well as some classic Sky One programming, they could put on some review/chart shows from Sky Movies and some non-live sport shows from Sky Sports, plus a flagship bulletin from Sky News perhaps!

This is terrible news, there better be a slot for World Live, it's the best thing about Sky Travel.

I can't see the point of a Sky Three, let alone Sky Mix/Two. Sky One's programme schedule is awful so what's the point of offering it again and again on two clone channels?

Sounds like Sky have just cottoned on the success of E4, ITV2 & 3 etc etc.

In a word yes! The channel can't rely on a handful of US dramas and then expect us to get excited that we can see them again on another channel! Half the time all they show during peak time is wall to wall Simpsons.

The point is though Sky are offering a service to none Sky subscribers - just a few weeks after dismissing the impact of Freeview.

There are a number of potential benefits to Sky in this - firstly, that Sky Three in theory would bring in higher ad revenues than Sky Travel - and secondly, that is could be sufficient enough to tempt Freeview viewers into subscribing to Sky.

I think the main plan though is to purchase the free-to-air rights of programmes airing on Sky One - meaning rather than a programme screening on "terrestrial" TV a few months after airing on Sky One, it will air on Sky Three when Sky decide - between 12-18 months - and hence, make Sky One a more attractive option!
