# is called lot's of things - 'square', 'gate' but rarely 'hash' these days!

Well in my uncle told my mum that the noughts and crosses board button was called a hash key. (on mobile phones actually, but same symbol same name logically!)
In the US of A # is referred to as a pound sign. I'm not sure why exactly. It's also called a 'route' (pronounced rout).

The Americans pronounce things differently - route pronounced the normal way is OK. Don't the yanks know what a pound sign is? I think they need a big one, so here it is...[size=10]£
