Have just seen an advert for the new Sky Sports News HD with a glimps of its new look...

Video Advert : http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12982_6286710,00.html

It did look nice on screens with much more space being used (athough that may just also be as it is in widescreen) Wonder if there will be a SD and HD version like with Sky News or if all content will be 16:9

Quote:
Sky TV customers with either the Sports Pack or the News & Events Pack will be unaffected by the switch, while all other Sky TV customers will enjoy Sky Sports News free until the end of February 2011.

Just also seen this from a poster on Digital Spy

Plus some details...

- New look - A fresher feel and widescreen format, using more statistics and video to enrich the key stories of the day
- Faster reaction to breaking news - more reporters and production trucks on the road
- More live reports - covering an even wider range of major sporting events
- Gillette Soccer Saturday - Jeff and the boys will be turning out exclusively for Sky Sports News
- New programmes - including Sports Sunday and First, Fast and Now
- New presenters - and a new giant touch screen for more in-depth analysis in the studio
- New apps - Dedicated Sky Sports News apps for the iPhone and iPad

Did have a look around for an existing thread but couldn't find one (search features isn't working for me)

I guess rather than leaving Freeview with little fuss they'll be plenty of plugs to subscribe to Sky to continue watching. Looks like Soccer Saturday being ditched from Sky Sports 1 then (and hence BT/Top Up TV).

I also imagine that lots of pubs use Freeview to show Sky Sports News and come the start of the new season and they will all need to book a Sky installer intime for the new season if they want to continue showing it.

To be honest, most pubs already have Sky anyway to show live sport. From a landlord point of view, it would be crazy not to show Sky Sports, as you'd be losing customers who'd want to watch the mach.

My pub doesn't. However there's an important point here. What's to stop someone registering with Top Up, purchasing a card and CAM, and then slotting it into the side of their pub's plasma? Besides the small print that is....

We (the student's union I work for anyway), have a freeview box dedicated to Sky Sports News, which then feeds the video matrix which runs all the screens around the building, meaning we can be showing cricket in HD on the projection screen, and Sky Sports News on the plasma's around the bar, or anywhere for that matter, as it's always available to any screen. This is going to have to change, and Sky Sports News will probably get dropped for one of the news channels, as we can't afford to take out a second commercial Sky subscription just for one channel.

Could you not get a free second box, or second hand box?

The rules for commercial subs are different than domestic ones, hence why he said commercial subscription.

Not sure it matters in this case, a domestic customer couldn't use a "free second box, or second hand box" to view Sky Sports News without paying extra either. Although I am aware that the 'extra' is likely to be a lot more in the case of the commercial subscription.

The utterly insane price tag for getting Sky Sports on it?

Nope, there are no options under the terms of the commercial licence we have (which do vary based on who you are and how much Sky want your custom) for a free or discounted second box subscription. The only way for us to get a second viewing card is to pay for a second subscription.

The same thing that stops you using a domestic satellite Sky Sports subscription in a pub I guess.

(Those pint glass symbols bottom right are there for a reason...)
