Again, sorry about this image; if you've seen the Sky News thread, you'll realise that I had a bit of a thing with my camera phone last night!

Is this the norm for the 1am hour? If it is, then doesn't it prove that a graphics operator is on overnight duty?

they usually have signing from 1am onwards on a Saturday morning yes.

Number 1 - the option for full screen wouldn't be available for Freeview viewers, and in light of Sky's new Freeview friendly policy (promotion of Sky Three, inclusion of word "Sky Satellite" when describing red button) this would seem an unlikely innovation.

Number 2 - How bloody long does it take to put two silver footballs and Soccer Saturday signage onto a part of the studio that isn't normally seen on-screen apart from during rolling score programs? And if a presenter can't get "settled" in the 4 minutes of a break and program intro (ala BBC News 24 presenter swapovers) then something's wrong.

Number 3 - The gfx package needs an overhaul anyway - the current look has been in for 2 years and as we all know Sky never keeps anything the same look for long. Added to this the blue and white with Century Gothic font looks a little old farshioned now, as does the fact that it is now one of the only news channels still in 4:3.

Heres a mockup I made a while back of what a 16:9 SSN on-screen could look like:

I did'nt know there was a new policy for Freeview viewers just because Sky News have started promoting 'Sky Satellite'!

In terms of Soccer Saturday, I believe that its desk is completely different to the nomal SSN furniture. There are screens on it, as well as branding. In terms of how long it takes; well you've got to take into consideration getting all 4 guests into the studio and allowing time for briefings and rehearsals...

I'm not sure whether I'd welcome a new package - the current look, in my opinion, does not look rusty or aged at all. Perhaps it will have to chnge ratios though - however, I am not an expert on this so cannot really comment.

there's nothing wrong with the graphics package - it's the studio which looks dated and in need of a face-lift. Especially as Sky Sports ditched the light-blue look a couple of years ago.

Presumably there's a lot more to it than just changing the set and presenters. They might need that time to do technical line-ups, rehearsals etc

It's more than just that... If you were to see the studio without the changes for the Soccer Saturday then you would see that it's very diffrent to what you see at home. The changes would take far longer than a 4 minute advert break, possibly 15 minutes or so. Also on Soccer Saturdays the cameras are controled by camera men and woman rather than from the gallery. There are also the extra cameras that they need to set up. There is normaly 3 for Sky Sports and they need to be changed for a Camera Man or Woman and there are 2 other cameras that need to be set up. I would imagine that they will need to make sure that the system they use each Saturday would need to be tested too.

Had to bump this up to enquire about this:

Note that the DOG (if it's clear enough) says Sky Sports News! How come Greyhound Racing was shown live from 9 - 10.30pm on this channel, as I don't believe that this has ever happened before? Is it part of a new deal, and will we be seeing any more of the same in he coming weeks and months?

An essential for the graphics operator to remember on 'Through The Night' - making sure that the DOG covers the date and time - otherwise, as was the case for a few minutes just then, it was actually midnight but the gfx displayed it as 11.00PM.

I think the greyhound racing was on Sky Sports News as the main 4 sports channels were filled with live sport.

At 9pm we had the British Grand Prix speedway on SS1; US Golf on SS2; Churchill Cup Rugby on SS3, and the cricket from the West Indies on SSE.

Having read your comments I feel that I may be able to clear some things up.
I think it is easy to speculate about the various shortcomings of SSN but really you don't seem to have a clue.
You talk about it being stupid to record 11am to 12pm on a Saturday because it is the busiest time but what you obviously don't realise is that SSN and Soccer Saturday run from the same studio. They have different sets which obviously need setting up. I am sure you realise that this can't be done in a three minute break so therefore the hour before is off tape to give everyone a chance to set up for Soccer Saturday.
As to why the programme runs off tape overnight. Well I think it is fair to assume that everybody needs a break so it is fairly self explanatory as to why the programme runs off tape, unlike you guys who obviously have no jobs and can therefore sit at home and criticise things things that you know nothing about. Cheers

I'm not going to be lectured by a poster who's named after a stupid cartoon character. Most of us have jobs - and surprisingly we also have days off. We KNOW that SSN and Soccer Saturday are the same studio - we're not dumb! We do know something about TV pres, thats why we post on this bloody forum!!

Re 11-12pm - in the 5pm-6pm post Soccer Special pres it comes from a diff studio - so why not before too? And through the night - well no-one disputes the non-need for a sports news service between 1am and 6am - but it would be nice if SSN showed some archive sports a la Five/ITV Classics.
