All we need now is Sky to take on board the abolition of OFCOM's '20 minute rule' (tomorrow) and put the ad breaks in US shows at the fade-outs and not cut into the programmes.
What's this? No more annoying breaks during a scene?

Hopefully so, as long as OFCOM don't back track when the inevitable complaints due to 8-minute parts come in considering the general complainer probably isn't aware of the changes.

After all, the 20-minute rule was supposed to have a degree of flexibility to deal with imported programmes, but a couple of years ago OFCOM seemed to back track and we were back to the mid-scene cuts again.

As for the rebrand - looking good, but can't quite work out if it's modern or dated. And for once people seem happy with the DOG following a revamp, though I bet it'll get made 4:3 safe sooner rather than later.

No, they don't

Ahem - my post was made at 6:24am in response to what I had seen minutes before on all 3 channels - there is a possibility DOGs were switched before you made your post, which was almost an hour and a half later! Razz

Re: ident appearances, I don't know what was going on with 2 and 3 early in the day, but I know from 7am on Sky1 they showed Whack-A-Mole in three consecutive junctions...So while I haven't checked this evening, I hope there's a bit more variance from junction-to-junction in future, and that they don't 'spam' one or two particular idents in that way.

I like the look of the new look. I like how the dogs are not in the 4:3 safe area, but they are edging on not being in the safe area of 16:9 TV's too.

They need bringing in a bit, as on my TV the 's' is being slightly cut off, which I find a tad annoying as it just doesn't look right.

Same here.

Yes, I know my (CRT) TV will be overscanning and hence it's the telly's fault, but no other channel has this issue.

What makes things even more bizarre is that Sky 3 seems to be worse affected than the other two.

Doesn't bother me particularly, they can move it further over if they like then I won't see it at all Laughing

I must admit I looked before and I thought the DOG is way out of place on my old digibox. I'm sure Sky HD fiddles around with the picture resolution because the DOG looks fine on that.

Suspect the DOG insertion for Sky 1 HD is entirely independent to that for Sky 1 SD.

Also - if your TV is like mine - I can have the option of 1:1 i.e. no overscan for 1080 line sources, but have to have some overscan for 576i/p or 720p sources... (So SD and HD sources have differing levels of overscan on the same display)

Hello all.

I've put the Idents that have been aired so far up on my Vimeo account, (I Designed and Directed the Idents etc.)

Towards the end of September, there'll be a whole section on my personal website dedicated to the Sky 1, 2 & 3 Re-Brand. It will go into the design and 'making of' the whole brand in some detail, so look out for it!
Plus the Idents will be in good quality H.264 on my site. (the quality on Vimeo isn't all that great)

Until then, I hope you enjoy the vids at:

fantastic work from Jon. The making of bits on the vimeo pages are interesting. Thanks for taking the time to post the link.

It has to be a first on TVF for the actual director of brand idents to pop up and post information. It's a shame that more posts were about the micro placement of the dog that the quality of the work...

A question Jon: Are the coming up trail/end boards produced with the programme video and text burned in; and the DVE on the credits done by playout automation, or are the programme trail, caption text, credit DVE etc all generated dymanically by the playout?

Wondering how advanced the playout suite is, and if it poses any design restictions - Is there something you wanted to do that is not practicle for regular use?

They don't seem to have that many idents, just boxes, whack-a-mole and shooting range. How do others think these idents rank compared to the other channels? I'd say that they're behind Channel 4 and BBC1 but ahead of everything else.

Hmmm, can't agree with that.

BBC1,2 and 4, C4, C5, even some of ITV4 are better than these.

They're OK, but have the feel of something made about five years ago. In fact, they're not a million miles away from Granada's idents of the mid-90s in look-and-feel -- and they were little more than pale-faced copies of the original BBC2 idents.

At least they look like a serious TV station now.

Yes, it is.

I've noticed that during HD programmes the DOG looks good, neatly in the corner of the screen, not very big either. But when an SD programme is shown, it looks as if a 4:3 version of the DOG is being used on the 16:9 picture, so that the logo is horizontally stretched and it doesn't look too good.

Haven't been watching enough of the SD channels to notice if it is, but it could be that it's happening there too, with the 4:3 DOG only in use and being stretched on 16:9 programmes, making it too big and too close to the edge of the screen.

What an excellent rebrand. I love how the idents are the same on each channel, with the numeral changing. VERY clever! Slick idents too. I love the Channel 4-esque movement of just the symbol being in 3D, rather than slapped on in 2D over movement.

The logos are nice, and do the job. Don't like the credit squeeze. The rest of the promos are good though.

ITV could learn a lot from this.

Yes I can't fault them, Sky really have done an excellent job on their new look, the idents, trailer graphics everything just works. Sky and John Yeo could win quite a few awards for this.

I really like the new look. The idea of solid/liquid/gas is certainly inspired. I like the fact that they've moved the DOG into the corner on 16:9 screens.

The only point of criticism is perhaps the size of the text on some of the promos. I have quite good eyesight (courtesy of contacts from SpecSavers) and my TV is a fairly decent size, but I do struggle to read some of the text - especially the programme URLs:

Yep - and using caps for URLs is a bit odd as well...
